Commuting - Deal alert: merino cycling jerseys for $19 and $25

I don't wear cycling jerseys, so I can't say anything about how good these are. But I saw them while searching for a merino tee shirt, and thought of the retrogrouch commuter forum.

The mens' is $25 (http://www.departmentofgoods.com/cutter-brotherhood-cycling-sweater-mens) and the ladies' is $19 (http://www.departmentofgoods.com/swobo-merino-cycling-jersey-short-sleeve-womens). They have the same return policy as REI, except that you get stuck paying return shipping. Caveat emptor.

I'd get it if it didn't have those stupid looking stripes on the side. What the hell was the designer thinking? Did he/she get run over by a bike and saw the tire marks on their jersey and get inspired????

And the close up of the stripes shows that it is all bitmapped. Ewwwwwwwwww!!!!!! Digital Grossness. Doesn't the garment industry have anti-aliasing technology??? Well they should by now. It's freakn' 2011, get with the picture!!!

Probably that's why they're marked down so much.

I don't mind ugly base layers, because they're hidden away by whatever other layers I wear - except in the summer. But I don't like cycling jerseys. Having something pushing into my lower back is no fun; it's a minor annoyance, but over a long ride, I don't want anything to do with it. So I wind up wearing the same (still merino) base layers on the bike that I wear hiking and kayaking, and then using cargo pants or panniers for my pocket needs.

I've got one of those. It's really really nice, looks good, and does the job. Really can't complain for the $$$. It's more of a mid-weight sweater than a jersey, BTW.

Mine arrived yesterday, pretty quick! Very well made, feels nice. It is definitely more mid-weight as nikwax mentioned. Nice and long too, it'll be a great layer when colder weather comes around again. Well worth the cost IMHO, no complaints. Thanks again OP for the heads up!

That's the thing about Merino wool- when it's cold it keeps you warm but when it's warm it breathes and keeps you cool. I have a short sleeve Merino jersey and it is easily the most versatile piece of cycling wear I own, except for possibly my Canari windbreaker.

Yea, I'd have gotten it if they had a L for winter use. Who cares what it looks like, it looks reasonably warm. XL wouldn't even fit under my jacket though.

If I had Popeye's forearms, it'd be a perfect fit....otherwise an excellent addition to my merino collection.
My wife said I should order a few more after I modeled it for her. (But I prefer Goodwill, SA, Savers, etc.: found another sleek 100% merino y-day for $8.)
Since I paid so much for the Cutter, this'll be more for off-the-bike use....I don't mind my $5-$10 woolies getting abused nearly as much.

Doohickie is 100 % right. I wear merino shirts for strenuous mountain hikes in July and August. Merino pulls sweat away from your skin like a bone-dry sponge, and is probably more comfortable than cotton ( or any poly! ) when it's hot.

Had an unexpectedly cool morning, 40*F, and tried out the new jersey. A bit warm, worn under a light windbreaker, but it breathes enough that I didn't overheat. Best described as "toasty." This is a good jersey/jacket/sweater/whatever.

If it has orang-utan arms, try folding the sleeves back at the wrists?

I just let them bunch up. I love the fact that when I'm stretched out over the bike, the sleeves are long enough to overlap gloves. That's gonna be awesome next winter. I'm 6'-2" and am not used to having sleeves that are more than long enough.

I bought one based on this thread, and have worn it twice (including this morning's commute at 39* when I left the house). It's long in the torso and the arms, but it fits me great for its purpose.

When I ordered mine (I think it was 4/9?) it said 1 left. Thanks for the heads-up!
