Bicycle Mechanics - re:earthquake/tsunami issues

I've heard from various friends on other forum that the earthquake/tsunami has pretty much put Japanese manufacturing to a standstill [statements made by Toyota confirm this
to some extent.]
Would the same issues apply to Shimano as of right now?

Shimano have already stated that there is no imediate impact to production from earthquake.

A lot of production is in the rest of Asia, China, Vietnam etc, and Shimano are based south of Tokyo so were not directly affected.

It will take time to realize the impact of the quake, and ultimately recover from it as far as manufactured goods go. In many cases while the specific item is made elsewhere in Japan, or the world for that matter, many critical components or sub components come from factories in the affected area.

The effect is greater in the electronics world, but can ripple through other products in subtle ways, for example if production machinery requires replacement parts no longer available. Right now people are looking for and finding alternate sourcing, and things will get back to close to normal, but there could be surprise shortages in 2011.

Totally, have seen some info about camera production, this has taken take a much harder hit that bike components; think the impact will be more for 2012 & 2013, not this year, unless it's for specific / unique components, as the 2011 model year for bikes is almost over.

And cars too. Honda, Toyota and Nissan have said they are on the verge of shutting down plants in the US due to the shortage of parts from Japan - and it also affects automakers worldwide. I also know Toyota is also telling dealers to conserve parts, fluids and supplies used in warranty repairs as well since some of the additives and parts come from that part of Japan as well.

They have an economey to re-build / keep going, that means making & selling stuff. ppl still need jobs out there, so nothing wrong in being interested if their production was hit.
