Hello Everyone,
My name is Yiannis pronounced /Yah nee/, and I am a thirty year old male from Long Island, New York. I am interested in tour cycling, though I have had several different bicycles throughout my life. When I was young I started out with a BMX, then later moved on to a BMX style Mongoose. At some point, like many other suburban boys, I got into mountain biking and would take my mountain bikes on trails in the woods near my house, but also used it as both a cruiser and a general means of transportation. I always wanted take an extended bicycle trip, but wasn't aware of bicycle touring until I was in my mid twenties, when a friend of mine cycled across Canada, and some others in our group of friends cycled the length of the Eurasia continent two years thereafter.
Over the last two years I've done a great deal of travel research and book/blog reading regarding people who have gone on long expeditions, and I have become very much inspired. I did my first modest tour a year and a half ago with mixed results because of an injury, but left with a sharp taste for the adventure of cycle touring, and an overall sense that injury aside I was capable of doing a longer tour. I also learned a great deal about what not to do on a tour, and I think that this has prepared me for a longer tour in a more realistic way than just having a fantasy of touring and never having the experience of trying it out for myself.
Cross Country This Summer
Unfortunately I just lost my father to cancer. Since I'm not currently working, I figured that in the interim I would head out across country, and raise some money for cancer research, or for a cancer patient in his memory. I am located on Long Island, New York, but I'm not sure which route I'll want to attempt yet.
I've been wanting to do a cross country ride for some years already, and because of current circumstances in my life at present, I think this may be a good time. My timeframe will be from mid to late May to some point in July. I have been thinking out a few possible routes for the last year and a half, but in the end I will most likely ride the ACA Bike Centennial Trail for my first transcontinental attempt because it's already been done several times over, and because of the possibility of meeting up with others along the way.
Ideally I'd like to do this solo, but considering safety considerations, and to keep certain concerned parties in my life at ease, I might like to travel along with someone, or try to tag along with a group that is already organized.
If anyone else is thinking about doing such a route around that time, I'd definitely consider a touring partner. Hit me up if interested and I'll tell you more about myself, and hopefully vice versa.
Thanks.
