My understanding is that the pilot takes a 11/8 headset. Bought one and it's too small according to the mechanic. Called performance and was told that there are two different sizes of 1 1/8 headsets. What can you tell me?

Bike Pedia refers to your headset as being a 1 1/8" aheadset slim stack which is a lower profile designed headset, unless LBS is talking about the integrated headset which you should not have. Could you have been shipped a 1' headset?

Thanks for the response. I bought it in person at the store. The box says 1 1/8 but the shop that's installing it says it doesn't fit. It's a Cane Creek brand headset.

If you bought it in the store, shouldn't they have sold you the right one? would be looking for a new LBS if they can't get that right.
The only variation for non-intergrated 1 1/8 aheadset you will find, will be for the length of the headtube race internals, this can vary from a little under 1cm normal to 2 cm long (doing these sizes from mk1 eyeball memory), and can affect the install of a fork.
as long as you bike doesn't have an intergrated version, which looks as though it doesn't, any 1 1/8 non-intergrated headset should fit
