Yay! I finally got a new job! And with it a brand new commute.

Distance has gone up to 14 miles, as I've found a place to live that's slightly rural. I now live on a ridge in the fens, so my commute starts going up the ridge, then a good downhill off the ridge, and then it's flat. Totally and spectacularly flat. For approximately 10 of the 14 miles! I'll have to take my camera out and get some pictures. Wind is going to be an issue, I think. :)

The new workplace has showers, which I think is going to be a definite plus. And my working hours are 9.30-18.00, so that should be commutable for the next 6 months at least.

There is a hill in the fens!
I crossed the fens with the wind in my back both ways. It can get really gruesome into a fen wind.
You should be able to ride in winter with some poweful lights. As I recall, fen roads have pretty good sight lines, not the twisty lanes edged by high hedges.

Way to go Ellie, sounds like almost the perfect commute. I can identify with the winds, if not the hill!

Congrats on the new job. I've got one too, but its literally 50 yards closer to home.

The 6 months of commuting will mean you can save up and invest in some decent lights so that you become a year round commuter---helps keep condition in winter.

What is the traffic going to be like on your commute?

Actually, all the old towns and villages in the fens are on small hills. They were the only bits above water before the Dutch came to help us drain them. That's why the city of Ely's proper name is the Isle of Ely.

Depends which way I go. Either way there are long stretches of single carriage-way 60mph road. One is a major A road, with quite a lot of traffic. The other is a smaller B road, with less traffic, but also slightly narrower. I'm leaning towards the B road at the moment, because I think it'll be nicer. Too many lorries on the A10.
