Touring - 1985 Schwinn Voyager

This is another bike someone had thrown out that I saved. Half step chainrings with a granny gear up front(50-46-30). I converted it from 15 speed to 18 speed and added bar end shifters, racks, and fenders. Haven't done any touring on it yet. I use it mostly as my commuter. Just wanted to show it off. Later.

I have a 1975 Voyageur II, so always interested in seeing other years of same model. I do not know if the 1985 models were from Panasonic, or another maker.

Lookin' good, Junkie. Definitely looks familiar. Here's my Voyageur. Schwinn equipped this 1991 version with 21 speeds, bar-end shifters and all the braze-ons--nothing to add except $$$ worth of panniers, fenders, etc. 17,000 miles on it now, including one crossing. It's a workhorse.

Racks are Blackburn. I'm not sure who made them either but I've seen a Miyata and a Nishiki that looked almost identcal.

I have an early-80s Voyageur, a mid-80s Bianchi Brava, and a mid-70s Trek. If it weren't for the markings you would swear the frames came off the same assembly line. Nice old lugged steel.

Nice job. How long did it take to build it and how much in parts. Did you have any trouble putting on a 6 sp. cassette to replace the 5? I toy with the idea of building up a tourer. I know you can get the frames for next to nothing and then spend the $$ on the comps. How much knowledge does one need to build a bike from a frame? I do a lot of my own repairs so I figure I might have the skills for most of the build-up. As winter is on it's way I feel like a project is brewing in my mind?? Charlie

My Voyager was complete, I just upgraded the shifters and tires and added the racks and fenders. I switched the friction downtube shifters to indexed Suntour barend ones. I had to space out the rear hub slighty and re-dish the wheel. Switched from a 5 speed F/W to 6 speed F/W. Sounds like you're mechanically inclined enough to build up a bike from scratch. Good luck. I two have a voyageur like yours with a crossing under its wheels it is 23 in. At 58 yrs old the toe over lap is getting to be a hazard. I have 90 cm. pbh. and was wondering what the stand over hight of the 25 in. would be? and where I could find a 25 in bike or frame?
