At least a small amount of less bad news. From the article you linked:
"Damage and injuries from the aftershock were not immediately clear. The Japan meteorological agency briefly issued another tsunami warning Thursday night, but later canceled it."

Even without the tsunami this doesn't help. I guess this was a shaking quake rather than a subduction fault quake, so they had that going for them. Still cut power to several regions.

the scary thing about tsunamis is that it can be a magnitude 3.0 that gives a 10m wall of water.

Very cool - there was a small co-worker leaving party in my office today and we were talking about this and one Professor was asking about if and why tsunamis were not that visible in the past (media, etc) and so we were talking about this - I shall email her this article - thank you!
