I am building an Xtracycle from scratch. I'm using a 2004(?) TREK 4500 frame. I personally weigh 250 pounds and will use this for of course cargo, but also out of curiosity, I'd like to try some loaded tours with it. So strength and touring performance combined is what I seek in a wheelset.
Any suggestions for wheel builders at a "reasonably" priced product to meet my needs? I purchased a wheelset from BWW in the past and have been very pleased, but Pat doesn't have the hubs to accommodate a high spoke 26" rim.
Some technical questions: The bike originally had an 8 speed cassette which I still have, and the spacing was 130 (I think?) but spacing becomes a moot point with the Xtracycle frame kit I'm assuming? I already ordered a Shimano Deore XT FC-M770 Mountain Bike Crankset (180s) which is deemed 9 speed. I have read this crankset to be fine if used for either 8 or 9, but correct me if I'm wrong. To be easy though, by going custom build with my wheelset, I'd just assume make it a 9 and buy a new cassette.
I guess I could just use a little assistance and advise in navigating the planning and organizational side of this build. The frame, rigid fork, and Xtracycle parts are at the powder coaters now, so the slate is pretty much clean and open for suggestions . . . aside from color at this point. :rolleyes:
