Hi,
last week I ordered this ebay item (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310282248798&var=610015028368&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT): Stronglight Impact compact chainset
196930
Searching on google as well as here in the forums revealed that the chainset is made by Sugino, and because I have an MTB Sugino chainset (by which I would swear), I decided to buy it.
Today I received this :(
196928196929
It is marked as Stronglight Impact, but it's very different from what I have ordered.
I was wondering if anyone here might know more about this chainset that I received: is it any good ? or is it crap ? any guess who might produce it for Stronglight ?

The only difference I see is the color of the rings, you got silver, not black; which will have no impact on performance.
As for being made by Sugino I can't see or find anything saying this is the case http://www.stronglight.com/stronglight/page.php?nom=produit&keyProd=impactcompact
You ordered a Stronglight chainset, and got one, not a Sugino, if you wanted a Sugino, you should have ordered on of them.

If you can't see the obvious difference, I will point you to the crank spider: please count how many spider legs (or chainring bolts) you see in each picture. 4 vs. 5.
The point is that I ordered the pictured item, and got a different one.
I posted this thread to ask whether anyone here knows anything about the crankset I actually got. If not, or if you know it's not up to the Sugino quality, then I'm probably going to return it to the seller.
EDIT: reference to Stronglight Impact being made by Sugino: http://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2006/07/impact-cranks.html (http://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2006/07/impact-cranks.html)and http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/500114-Sugino-Cranks-XD-500T-and-XD-600

I would send it back and buy one from someone else. The photos of the crank that I have seen on other sites show four arms instead of five..

Both are 5 arm chaining spiders, and the one you have recieved will be a lot easier to work with than the one from the orginal picure, as the bolts for the chain rings are all easily accessable the one in the auction, has a 5th arm, this is hidden behind the crankarm.
I have a feeling that the picture is a stock photo of a older verion of this item, not the current production item, also, it does note that it is silver in the photo.
At the end of the day, you have got the right / current product, the image in the auction was incorrect, but if you look at the manufactures image, this is what you got.
It does not matter if it is up to Sugino quality, as it is not a Sugino chainset, as I orginally said if you wanted one go an buy one, don't buy Stronglight, then complain as it wasn't a Sugino like you thought it would be.

jimc: it is not very easy to find Sugino XD double in europe for reasonable price without ordering from US and paying extreme import duty. That's why I ordered Stronglight and expected to get Sugino. Why are you repeatedly pointing that I shouldn't have bought Stronglight when I wanted Sugino ? Would you not buy Hyundai car if you knew they are rebadged Ferrari ?

Because you made a big point of this in you first post -
'Searching on google as well as here in the forums revealed that the chainset is made by Sugino, and because I have an MTB Sugino chainset (by which I would swear), I decided to buy it.'
As far as I am aware, Stronglight makes these inhouse, normally if a crank is made by Sugino, it will be marked as such on the back of the crank.
There are planet of options avaliable in EU for good cranks, from Shimano, FSA, SRAM
If you really want a Sugino XD, it doesn't take long to fine one, here are a few options from the UK.

Your replies are useless to me. I have bought that crankset. It wasn't expensive. Sugino XD2 are more expensive. Difficult to understand ?

And you are saying you may send it back, just giving you options.
The Spa Cyles option was £20, you paid £67.79, ok, the Spa one doesn't have chain rings, but even with them, it would be cheaper than the one you have, so can't see how it is more expensive

Still if anyone knows anything about the chainset that I got, please share your info. Thanks in advance.
