Bicycle Mechanics - Odd creaking noise....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Ok, so I have mid 90's CAAD2 c'dale mtb that I just added Time ATAC pedals to. A day or two after I started to hear a creaking noise when I would load the pedals. At first I thought that they were just loose or something, so I tried tightening them and then let it go for a few days to see if the noise would stop. So far it's still there, and maybe worse. I don't feel any courseness when the cranks are turning, and if there isn't a fair amount of load on them, then I don't hear a noise. I've checked for cracks in the frame and haven't seen any. I'm not real sure what it could be and was wondering if anyone had an idea or some diagnostic measure I missed (yes, I looked on the park tool site first) The only thing I can think to do at this point is to rebuild or replace the BB. I'm not sure what type of BB it is(bought the bike used and haven't needed to strip it down yet), and don't have the tools to take of the crank arms or to remove it right now. Thanks for the help.

My first experience with clipless also included an odd creak. It turned out being my cleats on my shoe. I can't recall if I put a layer of black electrical tape between the cleat and shoe or if I just tightened the screws. (Be carefull tightening the screws so you don't strip the threads!)

I'd say to check the pedals/cleats as well. If the noise wasn't there prior to the new pedals, then it seems the pedals are the culprit (or cleats as madhouse mentioned). I double/triple check these two things before going to the trouble of pulling the cranks and rebuilding/replacing the BB.

Mine was doing that after I took it into my LBS for a tuneup. I thought it was the BB or the handlebars. Took it back to the shop and it turned out to be the seat post. He pulled it back out and greased it up real well and reinstalled it. No more creaking. :)

Hey man i know what is wrong with your pedals i've had that problem twice before realizing what was wrong with them. There can be several thing wrong with em:
1. You tightened them to much and u flatened out the bearings, and now they creak. U have to change those.
2. When u put them in u probably didnt put enough grease on them so they creak with excess of pressure on the pedals like when u get up on ur pedals to go up hill or sprint.
3. Otherwise u should take off the casettes in the front and the pedals and empty everything and clean it up and then put everything back in pbut thats pretty useless and not to easy. So stick with #1and 2
