Bicycle Mechanics - Mavic gl330 and 9/10 speed hubs

Hi,

I'm building up a new wheelset with mavic gl330 rims. Would Tune Mag/Mig hubs be a good solution to go with these? I've heard that 9/10 speed hubs don't go well with older box section rims because of their "high dish". Any info is appreciated.

One of my favorite rims. No problem building it in 32 or 36h, but 28h can get a bit squirrelly. These are lighter than most modern rims and it's easy to overstress the rim. I suggest you use 14/15g or 14/16g for the right flange rear, and 14/17g for the left rear and front. If you prefer you can also use 15/17g instead for the front, but stay with 14s in the back.

So it's fine if I use a 10 speed hub, as long as I use the right spokes?

the rims date to an era of 6 or 7s on 126mm hubs. I'm not sure that the dish with 130mm 10s hubs is that much worse. You can check for yourself, by comparing the ratio of the R&L center/flange distance for a typical 7s 126 hub, to that of yours.

BTW- the difference in tension is proportional to the difference in center to flange distances, so that'll will give you an idea of what you'll be dealing with. As I said earlier, these are light rims and won't survive if you crank down on the right side spokes. They want a gentle touch.

The advice is much appreciated! I'm only 138 lbs, not very agressive, and will only be using these for climbing, so they should hold up alright.

I have a lovely pair of 24 hole GL330's laced with Ultegra 10 speed rear and Ultegra 9 speed front. I did go 14g on the rear and 14/15g up front. FBinNY is correct about the tension - go easy. Built up with Tufo S3 Lite the pair are very lite and great for the rolling hills out here in NC. I will get a weight on them tomorrow.

You should do fine. I weigh 190# and ride old Mavic AR10s (310g) with the same build. And I don't baby my bike in any way. So far the only issue is a minor dent after the rear wheel met the far side of a pothole at high speed. When I got home, I hammered the sides smooth, and they're still going strong.

:eek: Where do you find these guys?? I frequently browse ebay for rims, and the only ones I've seen under 400g are the Kinlin XR-270 at 390g. I would really like some light rims to build up.

The AR-10s are older than the GL-330s CerveloS1 is building up, so you might do better looking for a pair of those. My rims date to when Mr. Gorman was alive and running Mavic, sometime in the seventies. I might have some other rims stashed away. PM me the drill and I'll check.

Unfortunately, the aero trend and emphasis on low spoke counts killed off light rims, probably forever. it also doesn't help that the market for tubulars has also shrunk down to the last of the Mohicans.

The short answer is that there is a Shimano labeling & body style difference between 9 & 10 speed hubs. Not to say that it is a Ultegra 9 speed only hub.

Just took another look and weight. GL330 w/Ultegra hubs straight 14g rear and 14/15 DB front both 2X w/long alloy nipples
Tufo S33 Special 700x21 rear and S3 Lite 700x21 on the front
weight is exactly 2000grams
260g for S33 & 215g for S3 Lite
1525g for some old rims and new spokes/nipples/hubs (or in that range - give a little for the glue layers)

Dishing on most 130mm hubs is actually less than on old 126mm hubs because the non-drive side flange is closer to the center.
