Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - So I need to work on my spinning...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Did goldsprints for the first time today. Was super fun! However I lost which sucked. I actually couldn't spin any faster (its not my strong suit). The bikes were 53x13 and I still could have used more gear inches. Another guy who raced with me had the same problem. I think I might drop down my gear inches on my bike and hit some more downhills and stuff to try and get my spinning better. Carleton or TT want to chime in on any other advice?

Rollers offer very little rolling resistance. Any resistance you feel is actually the spokes cutting through the air.

Do you wear cycling shorts or jeans? Jeans are minus 20RPM off the bat.

Saddle height and position are also very important. 1cm can make a huge difference.

Get some rollers (with or without a fork stand) and practice. You can do it on the road, but it's easier in the livingroom where you can stop and micro adjust.

I had mtb shoes the first time I did gold sprint, and I pulled out of the straps...took big chunk of my ego out. Otherwise they are super fun because I could spin, but not as well as some other people.

well I am not trying to train to be good at goldsprints though that will be a perk. It was more of a reminder of something I need to work on for track this season. I know I am not the greatest as spinning after a certain RPM.

though i'm still not spinning very fast, i improved most probably on rollers. keeps you on your form, what with the risk of falling off, and you don't have to swap between a spin and commuting ratio (or find a decent hill, which is hard in davis)

+1. There's seriously like 4 or 5.
