I've searched the forums and googled for the correct sizing of a bottom bracket for above mentioned road bike. The threads on the chain side have worn lose and I need to replace it ASAP.

I've also looked at the spec sheet from the 1986 magazine (http://bikecatalogs.org/SCHWINN/1986/LightWeight/FULL/1986Ltwt30.JPG
but was unable to find any helpful information.

Thanks in advance for all the help :) I can provide pictures or anything if necessary.

I think spindle length depends on the crankset that you are using. Are you using the stock(original) crank that the bike came with?

As for threading, it's standard British 1.37" x 24tpi and 68mm width.

If you can do with a new cartridge BB then..
I had the same need a few years ago for a Trek 660 that came to me as a frame set. I got a Shimano 600 double crank and went for a UN54 cartridge BB. I went to the LBS and told them the situation.
I want a 110mm and if it's wrong can I just swap it for the right length. No problem. 110 was too short, went back and got a 113mm. Easy peasy and relatively cheap. http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/BB309F06-Shimano+Un54+Bottom+Bracket.aspx

BB is standard ISO/english threading.

The length you need is the same as the old one, which is probably around 114-117 mm. Bring the old one into the shop and they can measure it for you with no problem.

With a Sprint crankset, you want a 110mm axle.

if the threads are messed up on the fixed cup, I think you should take the bike to a shop. there could be issues with the threading inthe shell

That frame would have come with a Sugino 75 crankset and BB. I believe it actually used a Campy style taper.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll probably take it to the shop and have it looked at to make sure the shell threading is ok.
