Folding Bikes - Folding seatpost...

Does anyone know if it's possible to get hold of a folding seatpost from anywhere? I have an Apollo folding bike (heavily modified) and my main issue with it is that the seatpost just drops into the frame using a quick-release seat clamp when the bike folds. The trouble with that is that I may be commuting on the bike, but I can't leave it locked up all day because of the risk of someone stealing the seatpost. Is there some manufacturer that makes a folding seatpost? If I had one, I could simply use a standard clamp with a bolt in it, which would at least deter opportunists from taking the seatpost.

CM Wasson has modified Brompton's saddle adapter pin,
which fits on top of a plain seatpost.

I have the standard SAP, the other fits a QR,

You could get clever with some cable run up inside the seat post,
and anchored elsewhere on the bike.

so the post wont come out but so far..

Brompton's seatposts are flared at the bottom of the post,
so will only come out by pushing it out the bottom of the bike.


folding seat post is a key feature of Bike Friday's Tikit.

I read a suggestion somewhere (here?) of drilling a hole through the bottom of your seat post. Then when you drop the seat, you could put a padlock through the hole.

I don't know how it would affect the integrity of the seat post.

Though folding seatpost or this suggestion wouldn't stop someone with an allen key stealing the seat. Maybe a cable through the rails and wheels would be better?

To be honest, all I want to do is make sure some opportunist doesn't walk by and steal the seatpost and saddle, anyone actually setting out with tools to steal bits off bikes would know enough to see that my Apollo's seatpost, which is basically a piece of gas pipe, was not worth the hassle. The other reason I want to use an allen key is that it's hard to adjust the QR so the seatpost doesn't slip while it's up, but slides down easily when I fold the bike. A folding post would make that a non-issue.

was another discussion.. the idea : cable out the top of seatpost tube, around the saddle, and back in.

Anchor the cable on the frame and the post will not get nicked,

maybe even make it come up to just the right height, every time you pull up the seat.

I loop my cable lock around the seatrails of my Brooks saddle, then around the bike frame onto a post. That secures the bike and the saddle.
