Building a cheap bike.
I have Shimano 2300 brifters
The only officially 8 speed compatible derailleur I have right now is a Shimano Alivio RD-M410 (front crank is triple, so long cage isn't a problem).
Nothing is hooked up yet because I need cables.
When I go to the shop. . am I buying cables or should I be looking for a 2200 / Sora / something derailleur?
Thanks.
dwellman, The only issue I can think of is the front derailleur. The cable pull ratio is different between Shimano road and mountain groups.
Brad
You can use any Shimano derailleur you want to, except old DuraAce and new MTB 10-speed. Just make sure the number of sprockets on the cassette match the shifters.

Brad: Yeah. I have the FD covered. The RD was the only thing giving me pause.
EDIT: Oh, just in case anyone was wondering the closest bike shop is 35 miles away, so the more I know going in the less it feels I wasted a trip.
Thanks.

Friend of mine is riding around a GT aero aluminum frame and 8spd. He needed lower gears for the hills so he put an altus RD on and a 12-30 cassette. I personaly have a Microshift mountain 9spd RD with Dura-Ace 10spd downtube shifters.

Don't I know that feeling........
I'm in Ark. now, but last time I was in Crossville (from Mempho originally) I helped build a Tibetan Buddhist retreat for a couple of days out on this hippie dude's land that had a saw mill. Nice country out there. Anyway, just sayin' hello!

Yeah, Ive been oscillating between Knox and Cookeville. Cookeville is closer, but Knox people are more personable.

I get the impression that is at least as decent as Shimano Tiagra / Deore or SRAM Apex/X9.
In fact, on first glance it all looks very SRAM-ish.

I have the Nashbar Microshift road RD on my Ciocc. Nashbar Microshift MTB on my Shogun with an 11-34 10spd cassette and compact crank 34-50. I love it, I can climb the steepest mountains around here and not have sore knees. As far as quality I would put it about 105 or apex, price was 30$ on sale each. I have had the road RD for 6 months, the first 2 or 3 rides I'd have to adjust the cable. After that smooth as silk.
