On my 50th birthday I gave up cigarettes and bought a bike and a kayak. If the cigarettes didn't get me, I figure that either the bike or the kayak will.
Midlife crisis? Dunno, maybe. Whatever, I hadn't been on a bike on a regular basis since my paper route days, and I decided that it was time to get back on and ride. I'm having a ball. The kayaking is also fun but that's another forum.
As an excuse to get out and ride, I got out a city map and plotted out how to ride every block of every street in town. It took a year but I got it done. Now I'm working on all of the county roads, gravel and blacktop. Guess what? There are no leash laws outside of the city limits. Bark! Bark!
Along with the county roads project, I'm hoping some day to ride the length of the Katy Trail--225 miles of rail-trail unless they add some more before I get going.
My midlife crisis starter bike is a Trek Navigator 100. I went to the bike shop intending to buy a mountain bike, but to his credit, the guy that waited on me took the time to ask some questions about my riding intentions. I took his suggestion and bought the Navigator. I haven't regretted it. The Navigator sorta reminds me of a big SUV--big, comfortable, off-road capable but not real graceful or nimble (hey, that sounds like me: big, not real graceful or nimble. You know what they say about owners beginning to resemble their rides (or is that pets?)).
Happy trails.
