what is the difference between the Look 4x4 Eggbeaters and the Crank Brothers Eggbeaters? Which tends to be best?

The Crankbrothers Egg Beaters are better.

Haven't used the Looks but I do have eggbeaters and they are awsome pedals. No amount of mud will clog them, easy entry/exit, EXTREMELY durable and are very easy to maintain.

quite the following for the eggbeaters here... I may at some point have to splurge and get a pair to see for myself what makes them so special

I'm currently running Time Z's. too. I think I'll order some Mallets just to see if they are really noticeably better than the Times (because the Times are so darn simple and clean it's hard to imagine there can be much improvement). They weigh almost exactly the same.

Crank Bros. sold the licensing rights to Look. They are the same essentially the same pedal.

So look owns the licensing rights and both companies make pedals based on that mechanism now?

I guess. If their the same thing then I would recommend both:)

I say go for whichever one is on sale if they're identical. :)

They look identical on the outside, but the insides are different. If I remember correctly, the Looks use one sealed bearing and a needle bearing, while the Crank Bros. version uses one sealed bearing and a bushing. I think early models of the Crank Bros. eggbeaters had problems with the bushing getting worn out quickly. The bearings on the Looks should last longer than the bushings on the Crank Bros.

Are they similarly priced? Also, I've heard that Look cleats in general tend to be harder to walk on than SPD-pattern cleats. Or do these not use the normal Look-style cleat?

They use the same cleats as the Crank Bros. The LOOK cleats you're thinking of are the road version which is a plastic mess that roadies seem to like for some odd reason

We're talking about the Look 4x4, which are almost the same as the Crank Bros. Egg Beaters. The outsides are the same and so are the cleats; the insides are different.
These are different from the Look road pedals, which have a different cleat. They're also different from Time ATACs.

I'll have to check them out if I decide to replace my Shimano 520's. I've got my Shimanos cranked down pretty tight and I keep flying out of them, which is incredibly annoying.
Actually guys, the Look 4x4 is a superior pedal to the Eggbeater. Same outsides, different bearings on the inside, and MUCH more durable in the look pedal than the Crank Bros. needle bearing setup.
