Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Trek Soho S Conversion

I have a bone stock Trek Soho S. I was thinking about converting the handlbar set up from the straight set-up to a drop down set-up. With that comes the questions about converting the brake levers. Should I add a fixed gear hub and just take the brakes off? Is that even possible with my Trek?

Please help me with your opinions on my ideas?

Donno, but if you haven't ridden fixed before, use a brake.

IMO drop bars without brake hoods will more than likely be very uncomfortable for you.

You could try bullhorns and keep the same levers. Unless you think you'll be riding the drops a lot, bullhorns give you a lot of hand positions similar to the tops and hoods of drops and the option of more reach for a more aggressive ride.

I just switched out the risers on my Redline 925 for some bullhorns and it's a way different, much more stretched out, aggressive position. Better for longer rides, not as good for urban riding.

I was hoping this was going to be a thread about converting a singlespeed into a geared bike or something. Misleading title.

That being said, you could get rando bars (like the nitto noodle, or velo orange ones) and run them with your stock (what I assume are)cross levers if you really want drops, as they have a lot of flat area on the tops and tons of hand positions, or go bullhorns. You could get some drop bullhorns and get a little drop, mount your brake levers next to the stem and have a lot of hand positions.

They suck, I have drops without break hoods and pretty much the only comfortable position is in the drops.

I have the Trek Earl (very similar to the Soho) and I used it fixed daily. It has a flip-flop hub and it is very easy to go from fixed/free. I'm not sure how the Soho works or if it has a flip-flop hub.

one of the guys in my show converted his to drops, it's a killer setup, used tektro drop levers. i'll see if i can find a picture

You will need:
- new stem, suggest shorter than stock, proper diameter for the bars you get, either 26.0 or 31.8.
- new bars -- drop? bullhorn?
- drop bar brake levers or interruptor levers, maybe TT levers if you go for bullhorns
- cog and lockring

I <3 it! 3 weeks old with a few major alterations from factory trim... I still need to fix the geometry a bit - I think a shorter stem or an adjustable stem will have this thing dailled in nicely :) Fast, simple, and FUN!!
