My 5 year old son and myself rode 23 miles in a fun ride this afternoon. I had planned on going 35 miles until the rolling hills and the strong NE headwing convinced me otherwise. That's the furthest we've gone with this setup. We're used to riding an 18 mile fairly flat loop. We were the only father/son team out there with about 100 other riders. He's still talking about the good time he had. I know he'll remember times like these forever. :)

Wow that's pretty neat. Did you pretty much go non-stop? I would have thought that the kid would get bored.
Thats awsome! Sounds like you spend good time with your kid and Im surprised he was able to go that far.
I bet that was a quiet ride home.
We took approx. 3 stops along the route. Once to put my windbreaker on him, one again at a designated rest stop complete with snacks and lastly along a stretch of road so he could eat a chocolate chip granola bar. Of course I took advantage of all of these stops to refuel and rest a little myself :) .
My son's mother and myself are divorced and she has custody of him. I get him the usual visitation times and try to take full advantage of these visits. Cycling together gives us plenty of time to visit with each other as do some of the other activities we do.
As for the ride home in the car...I was the quiet one and he was a chatterbox (could have been the granola bars, cookies and powergels we ate :) . He slept really well that night though.
Overall he tolerated the ride very well. We talked about everything we saw along the way so I don't think he was too bored.
My daughter whom is 8 went on a 8 mile loop with me a while back.she just loved it.we talked about everything.she was never bored.she wants to ride more.but with winter uppon us I don't see that happening till spring.
lots of breaks and just idling along not being in a hurry.it's fun.
My 6 Y.O. daughter loves her trail-a-bike. We ride 40 miles at a time on a regular basis. Wife had the yearly parent-teacher confrence and teacher asked wife why daughter talks about bikes so much. Wife told teacher what me + daughter do and teacher thinks it's silly.
JUst wait a few years, my 10yo son, and I rode the NYC MS Bike Tour this October, we trained all summer, and we rode 37 miles, with two stops. It's great now he watches the message boards, so I have to watch myself!! LOL!! Keep cycling it's great I find out what is going on in his life in a way I never could with our other sport, Karate. No talk time there.
Where did you get your trail a bike, and about how much can the kid weigh to still use it? I am getting my brother a bike for christmas (a folder bike), and I'm thinking about getting some kind of attachment for his younger kid.

(I can't believe I have to say this to a Moderator) Any good LBS can order one for you. J&B Importers carries Adams, and they have a warehouse near Chicago. I don't know how well one will work on a folding bike. There are folding trailercycles as well.
Actually, I've never had a need for a trail-a-bike. Blame it on the fact that I don't have kids, nor do I want one. So why should I know about something that does not even enter my realm of reality? :)
However, I do know my brother was trying to figure out how to transport his younger kid around in the event of an emergency, and since he has my folder bike, my real concern is more about finding a trail a bike for a folder. I've not seen this before- just the one for the tandem and one I saw for Burley that was for regular bikes. Soooooo... having said that, I am still wondering if they have trail a bikes for folders, but I guess I shouldn't have asked here- I should have asked in the folding bike forum, or I should call the Bike Friday folks, since they know what can and can't be attached to their bikes. I've been to plenty of bike shops that claim such and such will work on the bike, then I buy such and such, only to find it doesn't work, then I have to go through the hassle of exchanging or losing out on the money because I can't return it.
Since no one knows specifically if the trail-a-bike will work for my Bike Friday, don't worry about answering my question. I should have researched it on my own.

Try eBay. Yes, I'm all for supporting my LBS but I spend enough money there. You can find the Adams Trail-A-Bikes there new usually with about a $30 shipping fee.
I did quite a bit of research on this bike but I don't know if it will fit to a folding bike :( .

While I haven't tried one with a folder myself, one would work. You'd just have to get the correct shim for the seatpost and lock it down at the correct height. I'd test ride it before heading out, it may be a bit top heavy.

Very cute photos. Your son looiks very serious. Great way to spend quality family time. We tried one a few months back but neither my 6 or 8 year old really wanted to get one.
Trek makes a fine one. I posted this pic in the tandem forum, but here it is again. This get up looks like a Dr. Suess invention, but we've had loads of fun on it.
