General Cycling Discussion - BioLogic Pollution Mask, really???

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Saw this advertised on one of the scrolling banner ads and it piqued my interest. It's a damned pollution mask for cyclists. Really??? wtf!?!?

If you need this when you ride, you need to move to the country or stop riding. It may filter the air you breathe but if you're cycling, you're breathing faster than normal and the mask would restrict that. I've worn a full on gas mask in the Army and it's pretty restrictive. Try running in one. It sucks.
BioLogic seems to be part of Dahon. They offer similar dubious cycling accessories:
iPhone mount, Cycle Tunes speakers, Blast horn. I will give them kudos for their post pump and the Freedrive chain cover.
I've worn a full on gas mask in the Army and it's pretty restrictive.Me too, some 20 years back, and unless the masks have greatly improved since, "restrictive" is an understatement.
It sucks.Seeing it effectively prevents sucking, I take the pun was intended? :D

:roflmao2: I was expecting to see a normal cloth face mask but this looks like a full on gas mask like you say normally used by the army and the like.
If you feel you need to use one of these then you seriously need think about moving to the country.

Respro makes masks that look a little less like respirators.

I thought it looked like a painter's mask. Since I'm thinking of moving to Phoenix, it caught my attention.
If you had to ride in Ho Chi Minh City, Beijing, New Dehli, etc.. you'd defo want something like this. It was pretty scary breathing that air just walking around.

People look at cyclists funny anyway, I can't imagine the looks I'd get with that bad boy on.
Respro makes masks that look a little less like respirators.Yes, they're more in the Hannibal Lecter facemask category. :roflmao:

Modern masks work very well and have pretty good flow and I used one daily when I was working on certain jobs with specific filters... had no issue breathing and could not smell a thing in that the filters were very effective in blocking the harmful elements in what were using solvents and they also did a great job of blocking particulates.

I think the filters on those military masks are designed to stop biological agents. Thus they would be much more restrictive than something designed to stop particulate matter and exhaust fumes.

Not to mention that they were built in the 50's.

If you were seen riding around with that BoiLogic 'gas-mask' in a major American city, you'd probably get picked up by the local police/Homeland Security Dept/the FBI in a not-so-kindly 'show of force'. Especially if you had panniers, a backpack, or rack bags of any kind, they might suspect you're bicycling around town while releasing a bioterrorist agent (anthrax, etc) or maybe even a radiological contaminant.

Those are useless.
There was a fairly in depth thread about this a while back.
Here it is: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/73048-pollution-masks/page2
I almost got one, and then remembered I smoke.
