I'm trying to find smaller middle and large chainrings for my three chainring crankset. I have a Burley Rock'nRoll tandem with a Cyclone Precision crankset. The bike comes from Burley with chainrings of 30/42/53. We ride a lot of steep hills, so when we bought the bike we had the dealer swap out the small chainring for the smallest one that would work, which was a 24 tooth chainring. So now we have a 24/42/53 arrangement. I don't like the large jump from the middle chainring to the small one, and we don't need such a large high end gear, so I'd like to change to a 24/36/47 arrangement to restore the shift intervals that the bike originally had. Our crankset is 130mm dia between bolt holes with a 5 hole pattern. Our local bike shop said that the smallest middle chainring we could get would have 38 teeth.

So here's my question. Does anyone know where I can get a 36 tooth middle chainring that would fit our crankset? Thanks.

Unless there is a specialty manufacturer out there, your dealer is correct. I checked several catalogs from major suppliers and 38 was the smallest listed for your configureation.

True. A 130mm BCD will support rings of 38T or more. If you have a 2-tooth development in back (13-15-17-19-...), why not try 46-38-24, for a good 1.5-step-and-grannie combo? I set up son #2's mountain bike with:

46-38-24 / 12-13-15-17-19-21-23-25,

which works out pretty well.
