Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Found vintage miyata 1000 at thrift store

First off I'd like to say hello as this is my first post, hope to have many more to come :).

My threads about a 1981 miyata 1000 I found and purchased at a trift store in my area, I was in the market for a 1st touring bike so I was shopping around and when I least expected it I found this gem in a trift store for 20 bucks. I have never heard of the brand but what intrigued me was that it had look Keo clipless pedals on it and the overall look/condition of the bike which I found in overall good shape.

After bringing it home and doing some research I found that this is a pretty sought after bike for vintage enthusiast, here's what's on the bike:

Original dia compe front and rear cantilever brakes, levers & hoods
Shimano 600 down stem shifters
Sakae Randnner drop downs
Suntour front derailleur and Shimano Deore Xt 730 rear derailleur "mt.. bike derailleur? "
Nitto stem
Avocet touring-w1 seat
Shimano 600 rear hub

I know the rear dereailluer is not original, would using a mt. bike derailleur hurt anything? what DR originally came on the bike for that year? I'm still learning about it and plan on Keeping it and refurbing it, I'm big about DIY but I'm taking it to a shop to make sure the bike is sound and nothing is bent but it looks and rides fine to me.. I already took the look pedals off and put on my Shimano 600 quill pedals just out of preference.

thrift stores where I live don't even have bikes, let alone crazy nice bikes

You got a great deal. That bike would probably be worth around $300.

With the right derailleurs (Suntour Cyclone GT) I would estimate that bike's full market value at least $600, if the paint is in good condition - and a couple hundred more if it still had the OEM front and rear carriers!

I really enjoy owning older bikes and with the info I'm planing on trying to hunt down the stock Parts and get it back to original shape. The it really is a beautiful bike and I love the gold outlines on all the edges.

Wonderful bargain! Well done for recognizing a quality bike and then buying it! You may have a new career as a C&V bike spotter for members here, as few have your kind of luck, especially first time out.

Now that you have a full-blown touring bike...you will find mountain bike rear derailleurs on touring bikes...check this website out...

I was riding the bike yesterday when I hit an unexpected bump in the road and slightly tweaked the rear wheel.. upon inspection it turns out I broke a spoke where the bump made contact, as I tried to bend it back a bit before adjusting the wheel literally popped in my hand and taco'd before eyes!

a few of the spokes poked through the wheel so I'm sending it to the shop for repairs. I really hope they can.. the mechanic saw the wheel and said "i've never seen a 40 spoke wheel before. "

Since I'm a nice guy, I'll give you double what you paid for it, even with the tacoed wheel :thumb:

I ordered a Cyclone GT rear DR to replace the XT currently on the bike, I'm crossing my fingers on the repair not costing an arm and leg on the wheel, I want to keep it as original as possible but I don't mind buying new wheels. I spent a good 6 hours today taking the bike apart and giving it a generous cleaning, pics in the morning. I'm gonna get tan wraps for the drop downs to match the gum hoods & Brookes saddle.

I need to figure out how to get my hands on some touch up paint to mask the chips but it's not a big deal, need stickers too but all I can find are 610 stickers, guess I'll keep searching

Miyata 1000... it is one of the best off the peg touring bikes ever made.

Our co-op is known for selling nice bikes at really great prices but a decent Miyata 1000 will fetch $300 - $400 and prices for decent examples tend to be in the $500 - $600 range in many locales.

He has obviously found a similar mother lode and should go back until the vein coughs up his racing bike.
