Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - How to get started with customizing

Hello, I'm new to fixies. I've been riding a beat up mountain bike around campus the past year and would like to have a flashier ride. I've been thinking about getting a fixed gear (maybe Kilo TT Pro from BD), and putting on bullhorns and colored wheels. Where do I start getting parts, bullhorns, colored wheels, etc?

i would start by dialing down your fit. Getting your bike to fit right is going to be tough process. It will involve adjustments and perhaps buying new parts if you get a complete bike (stem, handlebars, pedals, saddle).

I would look up a single bike parts company and find the color combo you want. Let's say neon green, what I have. Order everything that will fit your bike in neon green. Any other parts can't come in that color, for me black.

if you want bright colors and more "customization" than function, just type in "fixie" in the bicycle section of craigslist
you'll find plenty.

There are a couple ways...

I go with the theory if it ain't broke, don't fix it... unless it is uncomfortable, then replace. Bars, stem, saddle to preference, then when stuff breakes or starts going bad, replace it. Also, flashy is cool as long as the bike never leaves your line of sight, as in never gets left outside overnight. Having a blinged out bike screams "Steal Me! Steal Me!" to bike theives. If you have the flashiest bike on the rack, it will more than likely be the first to vanish in the middle of the night.

If I do buy the Kilo TT Pro, are there any parts I should switch out right away? Customization wise, I only want to swap out the drop bars for bullhorns, and the black wheels for colored Deep V's.

You might not need to swap out anything if it feels good to you. And remember, non flashy is more classy.

Just do those two changes first since you are sure you want them. After riding the bike for a while, you may or may not decide to change anything else but you'll have a better idea of what you like and want.

When you get the bullhorns installed, you can wrap them in your choice of bartape. Using two rolls of different colored tape, you can create a nice look. Plenty of youtube videos on how to do this.

I strongly recommend brakes for the front and rear, though just the front is fine for most situations. If you want to ride fast, you'll need to be able to stop fast.
