I drink a lot of soy milk because it's good (oddly enough), also almond milk is excellent. The Silk Vanilla Soy Milk is just sugary and vanillay so I can't stop guzzling it, to the point that I'm buying myself a Soy milk maker (http://www.amazon.com/Soyapower-Plus-Milk-Maker-Rice/dp/B001KT61P8/), one that can also convert almonds or barley or whatever else to "milk."

Often I guzzle this stuff before/after a ride or at breakfast because it has:

Water
Protein
Sugar
Vitamins

There's a smoothie recipe thread. Anyone have interesting soy/grain/nut milk recipes, or am I the first person ever to try this?

I drink a lot of soy milk, lite, vanilla. Almond milk doesn't have much protein and tastes watery to me.

oats make *really good* milk, from a whole-grain as possible or steel cut as a second. Personally I prefer the unsweetened versions of all milk substitutes (though unsweetened vanilla is acceptable for breakfast and coffee).

Coconut milk was, for whatever reason, 50% off at my grocery this afternoon so I stocked up.

The odd thing is though that the math for almond milk, at least in my market, never makes do-it-yourself a financial win. It takes a lot of almonds to make just 1 gallon of milk and the price of almonds per pound doesn't work in my favor.

On the other hand, it'd be unprocessed . . . AND you get almond meal as a bonus prize which is great for cooking and things like protein bars. . .

Also, keep in mind, that if you're making your own soy milk you should just be 1 step away from making your own tofu as well. Hopefully your milk-maker is one that gives you that level of refinement.

Soy milk, almond milk, and rice milk. Good stuff but rice has too many carbs. Never could stand coconut milk but the desserts are tasty.
However, I am now happy that I can drink regular milk again. Whey protein + milk = good stuff.

Thanks for the link, never knew these things existed - as I use a lot of soy and almond milk, this looks well worth investigating.

It takes about 1 pound of soy bean to make soy milk, as I understand; I won't use American sourced soy, though, because of Monsanto (95% of US soy is their crap and I won't support that company; they are basically a modern cement-overshoe style mafia). I couldn't find Japan sourced, so got Korean (would avoid Chinese as well, for other reasons).

But that's just my preference. And yeah, it costs like $2 for a pound of soy and $3-$4 for half a gallon of soy milk; at $2/gal, this is way cheaper for me given my high consumption ($8/mo instead of $32/mo).

As for rice milk, uh, way too sweet for me; and coconut milk is a definite no, I hate coconut.

Hmm someone here likes oat milk substitute :)

My preferences may be tainted by my lifelong allergy to whey . . .

It should be easy to find organic, US produced, non-monsanto soybeans at a local healthfood store. Not that you'd save much, but it wouldn't have to be shipped overseas. I think mine come in around $1.50/lb. I use 'em to make home made tempeh.

Soy milk is rich in isoflavones which is a natural ESTROGEN!. I bet you, long time users have man boobs and a *bubble* butt that you probably thought it was due to cycling eh?

I was wondering when someone would bring that up.

There was that one star athelete who blamed soymilk for his manboobs, but if I remember correctly he was also drinking something like 32 OUNCES PER DAY!!11!1!

Yup, I steer clear of soy milk figuring I get enough soy from other places anyway.

100% skim milk (0 fat) + whey protein = fantastic...as has already been mentioned.

Since I ditched actual dairy products I've been in FAR better health. I eat cheese but I don't drink regular milk; cheese is predigested but that doesn't much really matter.... A LOT of respiratory issues went away.

Beer is also estrogenic, along with a lot of other stuff. Also I drink a ton of soy milk, a half gallon doesn't last me long. In my experience, the ... ahem... physical effects of becoming more active (biking to work, etc) have created drastic ... differences ... in my general hormonal disposition, or at least the way I react to the hormone levels in my blood. I am sure if I ever had a girlfriend, she'd be pleased.

I tend to prefer almond milk though.

Seriously, bicycle > viagra.

there are also studies that have linked these phytoestrogens with an increased risk of breast cancer in women. but then again there are some studies that have shown the opposite, so who knows. my wife is a registered dietitian and has done more research on the subject (her mom is a breast cancer survivor) and she stays away from ALL soy products.

I really like the Bolthouse Farms organic soy milks... delicious! I don't drink that much milk of any kind, though.
