Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Raleigh Super Grand Prix

Need help. I don't have any photos to share, but did see some pics on a cell phone.

The bike is a Super Grand Prix, said to be late '60s or early '70s. The Raleigh catalogs dispute this as I can't find one until around 1977.

But the other thing is the bike features cottered cranks and the photos I've seen on the internet of 1978 SGPs have cotterless cranks.

The color scheme is gold with black headtube and detailing. The bike has chrome fenders, don't know if they are original.

Bike is in outstanding shape. Owner asking $100.00.

Oh, BTW, the bike has 27" wheels. Some years they had 700c, but this one has 27".

Finally, it seems that the bike likely has 20-30 tubing. Did it vary depending upon the year, or is it all the same?

Went to look at the bike. Made in Japan for Raleigh and it did not have cottered cranks as advertised. The pics were fuzzy and inconclusive, but when I showed up, it was not at all what I was thinking and the frame was too big anyways.

I have logged thousands of miles on a SGP. I had a 1978 SGP in high school. I live on the east coast, but I recently was able to find the very same bike I had, (size, color, etc.) on Ebay, in Bakersville CA. I snapped it up like a duck on a June bug. I ride it all the time, and it's just as satisfying at 51 as it was when I was 17.

700c rims and wheels- designed to replace tubular tires in training- came along in the early 1980's and took a few years to start filtering onto production bikes of a non- racing variety-

almost any bike from the 1970's that didn't have sew up tires and rims- unless they replaced later- would have had 27'-

incidently- if you have 27" wheels- 1 1/8" or even 1" (if you can find them) tires really do roll better and weigh less than than 1 1/4"- if you have alloy rims and 1 1/8 tires- it's really just about the same equivalent as 700 x 28 mm tires.

the original Grand prix through the '70's I think, had steel rims- I don't know about Super Grand prix- but i put a lot of Grand Prixs together the summers of '73 and '74. they sold for about $150 then. Steel cottered cranks, simplex shifters.

I sold a beautiful one last week I think was a 79. Hundred bucks, the guy was so happy.
I would of kept that one but had too many bikes. I sold about 8 bikes in the last 2 weeks to make room and get a little money to get more (-:

Was going to say there are also Canadian made Super Grand Prix's , mine had 27" alloy wheels, was made of Tange 5.

I own two Super Grand Prix'.

One is Japanese and one is English, the English bike is a 1979 and easy to date, The Japanese bike I've found to be nearly impossible to date except for finding a link to someone who says his twin to mine is a 1977 and he's owned it since new. I've still never found a catalog that shows my Japanese bike in it.

The Japanese bike has forged drops and came with 27s and down tube shifters, the English bike has stamped drops and came with 700s.

I don't think any of the SGPs are terribly valuable but they do ride beautifully.

The Japanese "1977" as found, is a much nicer bike than the English bike below.
