General Cycling Discussion - Bulges in tires, cheap fix?

I bought a Trek mountain bike at a yard sale. $15 a steal!

Everything works, but someone kept it inside and the bottom of the tires rotted or warped and forms a wide area of cracks that form bulges in the tires when inflated. It bounces lightly when going down the road

I really don't want to buy new tires for it, so is there any fixes to rid this?

24" mountain knobby tires
Size of bulges: 5 inch long, 1 1/2 inch wide just under tread but not on side wall.

Could the "Dollar" trick work, without a dollar is best. How about printer paper?

I don't know the real answer, but consider what goes through your mind when you roll down a hill at 30mph or more.

With tires at the condition you describe, new tires would be prudent. Sounds like those tires are ready to fall apart.

You saved money on buying the bike. Don't be cheap with the riding enjoyment and safety.

There is a cheap fix for that ... shouldn't cost you much money at all.


Buy new tires!!

Goodness, the bike was $15 and a new tire can cost about the same. Put a new one on, ride it and when you are tired of the bike, sell it for $75. You will have won.

I know I got a good deal, bu $30 for a new pair of tires is kinda high if you ask me.
Listen, I spent $100 on my road bike tires, I don't like to skimp, but I want to kinda round off here.

It's probably a lot cheaper to put on new tires and tubes than to pay an emergency room fee and follow up dr's appointments.
If you crash and break something, you won't have to worry about new tires or biking for that matter for a long time.

Bulging tires indicate casing failure. It's only a matter of time before the tire blows out. You really don't want that to happen when you're screaming down hill at 30mph or maneuvering through heavy traffic.

Bite the bullet and replace the tires now.

New tires are cheaper than an ambulance ride and a hospital bill.

Yes ... buy new tires ... even cheap ones from Walmart!

I pulled my son's old Walmart mountain bike out of the garage a couple of years ago. No bulges or visible cracks. Replaced tubes only. Blew front tire on ride.

You got a bargain. Even after you buy new tires and tubes, you'll still have a bargain.

I can pinch a penny till Lincoln is inside out, but I'm not that cheap. I have a Specialized Hard Rock that I got for absolutely free. But when time came to make repairs, I didn't hesitate because that bike had already saved me $20,000.

I don't think that, to this point at least, it's a good deal.

All that you've done to this point is to pay $15.00 to transfer a bicycle shaped piece of trash from the seller's basement to yours. Even if a piece of duct tape inside of the tires prevents them from blowing out, is this a bike that anybody will ever want to ride?

What's missing is vision. If your vision is a bike that you or some family member might want to ride I think that you're going to need a new set of tires. If your vision is to sell it and make a few dollars, new tires will greatly improve it's market value or you can part out and ebay the derailleurs, shifters and brakes.

done that before. it beats walking even though you hear and feel every bump the rims hit and you have to slow don't to turn.

Just remember that your tires are really the only part of your vehicle (bike or car) that makes contact with the ground. You really do not have a lot of leeway, if failure were to occur at speed.
