Training & Nutrition - extensor digitorum longus pain/tendonitis

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Anyone else on the forum here get this? Pain on the top of the foot, almost feels like you've tightened the heel strap on your shoe way too tight and its cutting into the top of your foot right where it meets the bottom of your leg? (Even though the strap is loose)

Just wondering, and if so, what kind of exercises and treatment worked best cycling-wise.

Thanks!

I'd bet on tibialis anterior, over the extensor digitorum. They're right next to each other, but the tibialis anterior works more in opposition to the triceps surae. I've had discomfort there from holding the foot dorsiflexed while riding. The muscle gets fatigued and forced into eccentric work (similar idea with shin splints), as the plantar flexors then fight against it, and they're stronger. Try to relax, and adjust saddle height if you're constantly dorsiflexing. If you're consciously "ankling," that'll do it, too.

edit: nevermind googled ankling. I feel as if I'm pretty conscious of this but I will try and pay even more attention

what does "ankling" mean? I think mine more came about from a week of training in the big ring to build some torque. It's only on my right foot. I might be able to adjust my saddle height, but I doubt it because any higher and I'll my hips will start to rock. Any exercises I can do off the bike, as well as ice it?

Riding in a big gear and trying to pull up and over the top could do it.
