want to put the lever before the clamp area.

clamp area is 26mm...not sure what the bar diameter is.

get a 26mm and shim or will the 24mm lever fit?

24 will fit. However, if you put a 26mm on the bulge next to your stem, you won't lose as much of the top hand position on that side.

ideally that's what i wanted to do, but i have a thompson x4 stem and it interferes with the lever.

tested it with a paul cross lever, and it would not work.

maybe it will work with a tektro or cane creek???

I can see how an X4 would be too wide and not allow enough clearance for the barrel adjuster on the lever. A 24mm clamp lever will fit where the bars taper down.
