I have a road bike I put together 10 years ago that has a complete Mavic groupo (Vitus frame -- an all-French bike). I've enjoyed it, but I've always thought of trying the Mavic Mektronic system. I scored one on ebay. Now the rub...

My 8-speed cassette won't work with Mektronic, which demands a 9 or 10-speed cassette.

My local bike shop can't seem to make this work, but I can't imagine that it's not possible -- Mektronic was out when I originally built the bike, I just couldn't afford it.

What is the most straightforward way to adapt my 571 8-speed hub to a 9-speed cassette? Where can I get the parts?

Thanks

Any 9 speed Shimano cassette will work. You'll also need a 9 speed chain.

Well, you would think it would be that easy, but...

My 571 hubs were built in 1994. The modern 9-speed Shimano cassette doesn't fit on that hub, which apparently has a differently shaped center.

Was there a change to the Mavic hubs post-1994 that brought them in-line with industry standard?

Is there a 9-speed cassette that will fit my older, 1994 Mavic hub?

Where can I get one?

If not that, where can I get a newer Mavic 571 hub that will work with some kind of 9-speed cassette, Mavic or otherwise?

Thanks.

Uggh. I thougth Mavic freehubs were Shimano compatible. You may be able to replace the freehub body with a newer, Shimano compatable one.
