Yeah, what it says above. I'm curious if anyone knows the max cog spec for each cage length of the SRAM X9 10 speed rear derailleurs. The website just says 36 with no clarification of which size, or if it is for all sizes.

I am looking to run a 1x10 setup with an 11-36. I tried calling SRAM expecting a 'we are closed' message at this hour but instead received a 'cannot be completed as dialed' message, so not really expecting to reach anyone at SRAM tomorrow. Thanks for any help.

Cheers,
-kyle

36...is a size? I don't think I understand the question.

36 is referring to the maximum number of teeth that the derailleur can handle on your largest cog in the back. Often the small ones just can't reach around the big cogs. The question is whether the 36 applies to all cage lengths (long, medium, short) or just the long one.

Note that this is separate from chain wrap:

Though if you know the chain wrap for the X9 short cage (or other), that'd be great.

Hmmm.... You linked to a ten-speed version of the deraileur. All of SRAM's 10-speed cassettes are available in options having a 36-tooth cog. That's not proof of anything, but it seems unlikely that SRAM would design a 10-speed derailleur incapable of mating with their current 10-speed cassettes.

Would still be nice to find some "chapter and verse" confirmation.

Well, I grabbed the technical specs manual from this page:

http://www.sram.com/en/service/sram/tech_specs.php

But the manual is old and does not cover the newer, 10-speed components. It does give the max cog size that you want, but only for the nine-speed derialleurs.

Just spoke with support and they had no concern's about running the X9 short cage with a 36 cog... though the guy seemed a little more focused on chain wrap (or my lack thereof with a 1x10 setup). I guess we'll see.

Jonathan, thanks for the links. SRAM's own links to the service section are broken. The site 'looks nice', but just doesn't hold up to technical use.

I'll post my experience whenever I get around to it.

That doesn't make sense - you'll have more teeth contacting the chain with a 36 cog than with an 11
