General Cycling Discussion - Why do people who ride cruisers act like jerks at bike racks?

My bike has been boxed in by cruisers at a bike rack at least 4 times in the last two months. Their handlebars are very large and easily go over my bike. The problem is the cruisers always come in two and there always seems to be one on each side. The latest time I actually could not get my bike out. The bikes weren't even locked and I was about to move it when the owners came out. Why do cruiser riders always seem to trap other bikes at bike racks? They seem to not care about how the other bike will get out.

I don't ride a cruiser, but I always try to leave enough space for people to get out.

As a Cruiser rider I can tell you that you have some ownership of this problem when you park in a place, or manner, that allows you to get boxed in. Take more care when and where you park and the problem might just go away. That said, those Cruiser riders that are boxing you in might not be doing it on purpose. They park their bikes and walk away with no further thought about......just like you do.

Thats the problem, they don't even think about how you are going to get out.

It's because they're the clueless, self absorbed, starbucks-addicted, McDonalds munching, SUV driving soccer moms of the cycling world.... the same type that will illegally double park their SUV and block your car in because they consider themselves too good to bother finding a parking spot like everyone else, but if you say anything to them they'll tell you that you need to 'take ownership' of your problem.

I can see that some here think that the OP can park wherever he wants to and the let him whine when he get blocked in by other cyclist that are doing the exact same thing by parking where they want to. If the OP doesn't want to be blocked in then he should park where he can't get blocked in or it's harder to get blocked in. Either way he owns what he does with his bike not the people who park around him.

Maybe the root cause of the problem is that the bike racks are poorly designed?

Exactly, cruiser handle bars go way over to the side and back. They reach over the frame of my bike. When two are right next to you the handle bars can cross over your bike. This means there is absolutely no way you can get out.

It's a Public bike rack. I'm shure there is probably a owner of a 16'' or 20'' bike saying the same thing about you.

There is the possibility that they are doing this to be jerks, it's true. However, I'm going to wager that it's an unintentional action. The cruiser owners are not locking their bikes up. This tells me that they plan on leaving before any of the locked bikes need to get out (or so they thought). That they showed up as you were leaving illustrates this fact.

Is this happening at the same time and place with the same folks?

My guess is that they don't even know it's a problem. I've had bikes parked around me that weren't a problem when I went in to work, but those bikes left and the ones that replaced them were a problem when I came out to leave at night. There's nothing you can do about that if the end spots aren't open and there's nothing nearby other than the rack to lock to. I consciously try to make sure if I'm locking up near someone I'm not making it difficult for them to get out (or access their lock), but not everyone takes the time to think that way.
