Books, Movies, Music & Entertainment - "Touching the Void" on PBS

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I saw an advertisement for "Touching the Void"- that movie about the doomed expedition to Mt. Everest. They are going to premire the movie on PBS in November. They didn't give a date, but it won't be this week for sure (went through my TiVo wishlist to check for times). If you wanted to see the movie, just keep an eye out for it.

I rented that movie just the other day. It is quite a story, and although I haven't read the book, I thought that the movie was very well done. If you liked "Into Thin Air", then you would like "...Void" as well.

Thanks for the heads up. I want to see that movie, but isn't it about a mountain climbing expedition in south america (not everest) or am I confusing it with other movie?

Yep, a couple silly kids nearly get themselves killed in the Andes. Vivid descriptions of pain and grinding bone fragments. Ouch.

Yes, it happened in the Andes. I mentioned "Into Thin Air" in the sense that it's about a climb that went bad, and what ensued. I didn't think of it as an "expedition" - less formal - just two climbers and a fellow that hung out at base camp. That is what made it intense. Throughout they are talking about their thoughts and feelings. Nothing that you probably haven't seen before, but I thought they did a good job of it.
Whoops... thought it was about the Everest expedition, but it's still all good. I still want to see it. I'll find out when it's on PBS.

Touching the Void shall be on most PBS stations this sunday, Nov 21st. In the NYC area, WNET (channel 13) is showing TtV on Nov 21st at 9pm.
The mountain in the Andes Joe Simpson and Simon Yates climbed is Ciula Grande. The DVD has an excellent documentary on the climb and also the return to the place with Joe and Simon on it.
