Touring - Unsightly handlebar gadget build up

Lot of stuff on my handlebars...Bag mount, computer, in-line brakes. Need to get a light up front. Can't use a handlebar extension because of the bag. Right now, I'm using this mounted on the fork to carry the light while I commute.

Which is fine, but when I put on the front panniers, the light will be blocked. I think the solution is to mount it on the hoop of my low rider rack, above the wheel.I have searched and searched for a mount of some kind but have been unsuccessful. Any one else have any suggestions? Thanks for reading.

Can the light be helmet-attached?
I've seen guys do that and it makes some sense as then you've got light wherever you're looking rather than wherever the bike is pointed.

My LHT has the Surly front rack with a CYO dyno-powered headlight mounted there. Any headlight meant for fork-crown mounting will work.

Does your front rack have an eyelet like that?

The fork crown has a hole for a brake bolt. This is a useful location for a lamp mount (http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/b&m.asp) and a standard location for dynamo lamps.

I've tried a number of different mounts, some interfere with the headset race. Plastic ones are not usually strong enough. Old, steel reflector mounts are good. I made one out of scrapped aluminium cranks and some sections of old chainring.
The Busch and Muller style thick steel wire loop is very strong and reliable.

I have seen pictures that show lights mounted on the hoop of a low rider rack. If I recall, most folks wrap tape or something similar to the hoop until the diameter is large enough to allow the bicycle mount to attach. Here are some examples:

I just discovered the Cinelli Checkpoint yesterday. Seems decent, but has poor ratings on roadbikereview, so I dunno.

roadies hate it, ? maybe too Phred for their tastes..

I use a helmet light but I'm building a mount for the bar bag using velcro. I don't know enough about your bike to know if it's useful but you may consider a 2nd stem with a short piece of bar clamped in to mount your bag. I'm installing one next week to deal with problems cross levers have created in spacing.

I usually clip a headlight to my helmet. Having it higher up (in most cases) means it's more visible to traffic and it's useful when you're off the bike as well. All of these look like good solutions though.

Cut a short piece of PVC pipe and bolt it to the low-rider hoop. Use standard handlebar light mount to mount light on the PVC. Did that on my gf's bike and it works fine. Cost and weight is negligible.

Did something similar on my bike, but I have a platform front rack so used the spare mounts that came with my handlebar bag to clamp on the PVC.

I cut a strip of inner tube rubber and wrapped it around the horizontal rod on the front of the rack, the strip was about 3/4 of an inch wide and the length is what was needed to make it about the diameter of a handlebar. See photo.

If you do this, put some tension on the rubber as you wrap it so it grips the metal tightly.

this is not a front light but maybe it will trigger an invention of your own. it wound up up being quite effective; durable & cheap

Depending on what kind of light you're using, and handlebars, you could probably mount it on the downward curve of the drop in the handlebar then re-wrap the bar tape.
