Touring - Can anyone tell me anything about this model of touring bike, I found one used.

Cannondale T1000.

I see several references in google, with the latest seeming to be 1999ish. Anyone know anything about this bike. I found one locally with rack and with a 'burley trailer' for around $500. Just wondering if anyone had any experience.

Good solid bike and IIRC the T-1000 was their top of the line bike. What kind of condition is it in? Do any components need replacing due to wear? Does it fit?

episodic, Cannondale's first production bike was a tourer and now they don't make them any more. :( They're very good bikes (I have a 3.0 touring frame) and bike + trailer is a good deal. If it fits, dash off to buy it.

Well, I have it sitting here, I'd post pictures, but my card reader is at work. It sat in a shed in the country. The chain is rusted. The cables are rusty. There is rust on the cassette. The fork has rust on the dropouts where the quick release levers are. The chrome on the handlebar is dotted with specks of rust. It has 'hydraulic brakes' (don't like that at all) The hubs seem smooth and no play. The trailer seems in good shape except for the hitch part is rusty. I thought I'd run it by the LBS but the more I think about it, it is a no. Turns out that through work acquaintances he knows who I am, so he trusted me to take it with me (the bike) till tomorrow to check out. It looks like with 'lots' of work and tlc it'd be a pretty bike. I'm not sure if it is worth it though. Does a little rust on the dropouts bode terribly? I could polish the chrome off, replace the chain - not sure if the cassette needs replacing. The hubs probably need overhauling just because. The rear wheel needs to be trued. The tires are slightly dry rotted as they are cracking in places.

1- what kind of hydraulic brakes? Of that age, they're probably Magura rim brakes, and they were top of the line. They're still extremely popular in the Trials world, so parts are plentiful.

2- The Burly hitch can be replaced for about $10. Burly's are reputed to be excellent trailers. In good shape, I see them used for the $100 to $200 range.

3- A rusty cassette shouldn't be a big deal. Wire brush it off and it'll be fine.

4- A little rust on the drop outs isn't a problem either, as long as it's only surface rust.

5- The rest should be able to be worked through by a competent home mechanic (ie, truing wheels, replacing cables/housing and the chain, replacing tires, etc.)

If it fits you and you like it, keep it (IMHO).

Magura rim brakes are fricking awesome... and I would tour with them anywhere in Canada/USA where parts are no problem. With a trailer seems like a decent deal, well it would be for me as I like working on bikes. Depends on your shop I guess.

If it fits...

Rust on the dropouts is most likely minor surface rust, not uncommon on a bike that has seen use. Check and see how stretched the chain is, if it checks okay a new chain and some driveline cleaning may be all you need. If the chain has been extremely stretched you may need to replace some cogs or the entire cassette/freewheel.

From your description I would guess around $250 if you pay to have everything done and the necessary parts replaced, but you will have a helluva nice bike that with care should carry you for years to come.

I loved my T1000, and toured all over Texas on it. If it could take 42mm tires, I'd likely still have it.

The rust is inconsequential, as all the structural parts of the frame are aluminum. It doesn't sound like it would be that much work to make it nice, but I have to say that from your description, I probably wouldn't be inclined to pay over $350

I've got a 1992 T600 that just hit 81,000 miles. It's been built up to the Ultegra/XTR/XT level as components have worn out. That's a backward way of saying that the frame is solid and I've really felt it's worth spending money to keep it running.

I bought it. I offered him $400 (just to haggle) and to my surprise he took it. He seemed to like my son and was thrilled with the fact that we were riding together, etc. He sat around and talked and asked us to ride back by on it when we got it fixed.

I just overhauled the front bearings. I'm going to do the rear tomorrow, and then I'm going to drop it off at the bike store to rewire the brakes and shifters and to true the rear tires. (I hate messing with those). I've got some vittoria 32c touring tires on the way to replace the slightly dry rotted ones. My son has shined all the rust specks off the chrome with some steel wool and oil and cleaned the frame.

Bonus stuff, he gave us a Topeak Frame pump, extra spokes, pulled out a blackburn front and rear rack with all the mounts and everthing. We made a grocery run with the trailer today, and it works like a champ. Looks like we are set :)

Then he threw in a Northface 2 man tent that he only used twice! Its all there and good as new.
