I was wondering if I could use a road handlebar/stem or sould use a specific cx handlebar/stem. And also if you could suggest a specific handlebar/stem that works well that would be great.

Also what kind of tire would you recommend.

As you can probably see Im new to the world of CX and any advice would be great

Thanks

You want a wider handlebar with flared drops and larger bends.

Turning the shifters some degrees inwards will give you less stress on the carpals (wrist)
since you now probably have a handlebar wider than your shoulders.
These work fine

You can read more about them at http://www.salsacycles.com/comps_handlebars.html
They are made in both standard and OS size

Thanks for your help. Would you recommend a mountain bike stem to go with that or do road stems hold up fine?

I'm running the Ritchey Biomax bars which are similar @ one size wider than my road bike. This set-up works well for me. Here's a pic of my Salsa with the bars. I have since rotated the bars down just a bit. I'm running a Thomson MTB stem.
