Track Cycling: Velodrome Racing and Training Area - Rollers on a track bike?

I've got a set of rollers in my room right now - I'm wondering if anybody uses their track bikes on rollers? Is it just plain shtoopid/dangerous? I can't imagine it'd be much different than a regular road bike, but for some reason I'm kinda wary. Thanks in advance -

Nope it not stupid. Rollers are good to go for track bike . They race on rollers and know as ROLLER RACES.

Yup. Go ahead and give it a try. Track bikes are actually easier to ride on rollers. They force you to be smooth, so you won't be moving around nearly as much on them as compared to a road bike.

Absolutely fixed on rollers rocks. Goldsprints are a regular event many places. It's a telling thing when you know how well you can do the 500m Goldsprint. I think my friend is going to make it a very regular thing around here, his halloween party this year, which is always a big blowout I hear, was based around Goldsprints

I use them but not free fall style. I have one of those doohickies which you attach your fork to. Works well and allows me to spin through the cold winters of Chicago.

i use my track on rollers. no problems. i never used a regular road bike on them, so i can't really tell if it's harder or easier but i like it.

Yeah, go for it. It's not like you'll propel yourself across the room if you slip off the side. You just sort of stop and fall over. Only, try not to have your rollers set up next to a sharp-edged metal table saw like I did...once.

Fixed on rollers is great!! Excellent for training.

If you have adjustable resistance you can really get your spin down. Come spring you will be able to spin 100+ rpm all day long.

I will not wear rollers shopping or on a track bike.

Just don't lockup on rollers especially if they're pvc.

I was doing a roller session 6 years ago and experienced a front tire blow out. I knew the tire's sidewall was in bad shape (super light track tubular with a little abrasion). Since the tire wasn't up to snuff, I wasn't using it to race, only training at home.
I forgot about the tires condition for a while until about 40 minutes into my routine. As I was spinning (maybe 90-95 RPM) I started to hear and feel a thumping... And knew it must be the tire starting to go. I slowed to about 5mph before it blew. I was about to unclip (Look pedals with slippery cleats) when it happened. I was on the floor in a second. I lay there laughing for a good two minutes. Just a few friction burns from the wood floor.

But yes- I prefer fixed on the rollers.

What kind of rollers are you guys using? This crappy winter has got me thinking about getting a set, but I don't want to spend a ton of dough. Any suggestions?

High quality! For sure. I only suggest alloy drums and metal frames. Larger diameter drums are easier to get used to.
I bought (traded actually) my Kreitlers, third hand, seven years ago. I replaced the belt once. Thousands of miles with wonderful service.

As far as base miles- you might want to think about a fluid/magnetic/wind trainer... I use the rollers for form, cadence, smooth pedal stroke... Trainers are easier for 2-4 hour sessions while I'll use my rollers for 1-2 hours. I also like the rollers for warming up at the track- nice with lower resistance.

Yeah, that's what I figured.. I can't seem to find Kreitlers at a decent price anywhere , used or new. I suppose this says a lot for the quality their product though. Any experience with Minoura Mag rollers? I've found a set of those for a hundred bucks, and I think they have aluminum drums, not sure about the diameter though.

Yeah, maybe I would be better off with a trainer, it just seems like it would be really boring .

The question should be is there anyone who doesn't use their track bike on rollers, its easier to get started on rollers with the pedalling assistance from a fixed wheel.
