Bicycle Mechanics - Front Derailleur folding bicycles

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I am trying to add front derailleurs to my 2 folding Downtube bikes, pictures attached. The problem is the seat tube angle means that they have to be set further back than normal in relation to the large chainring. I have clamps that fit and the necessary clearance for the 2 chainrings (22 & 42). I only need the largest 3 or 4 cogs with the 22 t chainring. Will it be a no go if the derailleur sets a bit behind the highpoint of the large Chainring? as long as I leave enough clearance? I considered using the forward tube on the mini but that set the cage too high to clear chain on small ring.
your best bet is to just try it.

Very specialist question, I think you will get better & more appropriate on the Folding Bikes forum than here.
