Texas - Houston: Peckerwood TEXDOT puts up sign forbidding riding Memorial drive.

I'm assuming it was TEXDOT, but it could have been the City of Houston. I was on my way home making the left from Shepherd onto Memorial Drive and noticed a newly minted sign hanging up on the right. The upshot is "All non-motorized vehicles forbidden on Memorial"

What the hell man! Don't they know that MEMORIAL DRIVE passes right through MEMORIAL PARK?:twitchy: How are we supposed to get to the park under our own power??? :notamused::mad:

Yeah, that sounds about right. Usual stupid stuff. I guess we will need to walk in the grass to get there now huh?

Well, the sidewalk is out. :notamused: Just past Sandman it's got a massive BMX jump on it. (Sidewalk heaved up into an uneven ramp)

The ban seems to only be west bound. I don't recall seeing a corresponding east bound sign at least not up to Shepherd. I can understand past Shepherd as it becomes Memorial Express way at that point.

stinks. is it the entire stretch of memorial? i know between shepherd and downtown, bikes can't be on the road, did they just extend a little past shepherd? maybe a small electric motor will be the work around?

you can roll up sandman to blossom. not fast by any stretch of the imagination though...

TXDOT had nothing to do with this. These are simply replacement signs for old ones that gradually disappeared, and only apply to the controlled-access part of Memorial Drive, which is like a freeway, with a minimum speed limit of 40 MPH and maximum of 50 MPH. Can you go 40 MPH on your bike, anyway? ;)

After the old signs had disappeared, some riders and even joggers were starting to use the main lanes of the controlled-access part of Memorial, which with its high speeds, curves, and hills, was like riding or jogging on a freeway, but complicated by the lack of shoulders or emergency lanes.

I can't count how many roads I've been on where the speed is 45-60mph and there isn't a shoulder. If a "no bicycle" sign is not required out there, I don't see why an exception has to be made for Memorial...oh, it would inconvenience the cars too much. I forgot. :) hahaha

I don't think Memorial Drive is part of the state highway system. The signs would have been put up by the City, since TxDOT has no jurisdiction on city streets. Some streets are on the system (Westheimer is FM 1093 west of Lp 610) but most are not.

wait what? that doesn't make any sense, or do you just mean *on* memorial, west of shepherd? I bike through down town all the time from shepherd. I'm right off montrose and I ride my bike basically everywhere but Memorial/Allen Pkwy (because that road is serious business during commuting hours). They even have that 'bike to the ballpark' thing going on with bikebarn or whatever now.

I must be nearly blind cause I've ridden from Memorial park to Buffalo Bayou park a lot lately and never have seen that sign. I just use the sidewalk which connects to the hike & bike path.
