There was a guy out here that claimed he was fixing up bikes for charity.... the same guy started flipping the donated bikes. No class.

Was it the guy in Plano a few weeks back? Seriously he was saying he was recycling & donating the bikes to kids in his neighborhood who couldn't afford them - in PLANO!

There are at least two flippers here who try that crap, one claimed to be starting a church cycling club.

At Bicycles for Humanity we flip bikes quite often, releasing about 100 vintage road bicycles and roadsters, per year, back into the Thunder Bay community. The proceeds from these flips go towards paying for the costs to ship 500+ bicycles to Africa. So far, our group has shipped 3,200 bicycles to Africa, in seven shipments and we have spent close to $70,000.00 of money we earned, doing it.
I, like any other B4H volunteer, can earn a bicycle. We get $10.00 per volunteer hour towards a bike we pick out. The bike's value is determined by group leaders, and then the volunteer works the value off. Most Ten Speeds and old roadsters, bikes we cannot send to Africa, are valued quite low. High end mountain bikes, and we do get them, are valued in accordance with what they will fetch in Thunder Bay. The same goes for full suspension bikes. They too do not go to Africa.
Our Bicycles for Humanity group is quite legit and very successful at achieving its mandate - "to salvage and share bicycles with the hope of reducing pollution and poverty". We have reached the point of incorporating our efforts and jumping the rest of the way in to the B4H movement with both feet. This is a bit scary for a guy like me but gonna go for it anyway.
I am a flipper, and proud of it, though I do not like the word one bit. I have salvaged thousands of bicycles, offered hope to hundreds of people and helped to tidy up Mother Earth.

+1 Randyjawa! Donated bikes, fix and flip and proceeds go to a Charity. What's wrong with that? If it's run through a church or a 501c3 the IRS is supposed to keep tabs on this.

Yup! And B4H-TB intends to incorporate this year. From now on all records of released bicycles will be kept. A bit more work, but now we will be able to apply for grants to help with our resource issues.

In fact, the quality of our shipments is so good, when compared to other chapters, that the head guy in Namibia came to Thunder Bay to see how we managed the quality loads we are sending.
Simple, we operate all year long, culling and parting out poor bikes for spare parts, and including those with the good bikes, for shipment across the big pond.

Randy - I am sure Fenway was referring to the unscrupulous flippers who POSE as a legit charity. I agree - Bomb them with unsalvageable BSO's!

I agree with the B4H model and charitable groups in general. What bugs me are the swindlers who prey on the generosity of people who believe they're helping a charity. It's no different from the illicit "donation" boxes that are left in various parking lots around the city here, though I suspect people tend to use them as dumpsters...

I can't remember... it was last year. He named some organization. I checked to see if it was 501c3 but it didn't even exist as far as I could see. I emailed him and he was just doing it on his own, but then a flipper showed up out of nowhere and I sent a question and he replied with the same email address as the guy collecting bikes for charity. :\
