Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Newbie needs your assessment on a 1973 Raleigh Super Course

Newbie here in need of sage advice. I have the opportunity to purchase a 1973 Raleigh Super Course for $225. I haven't seen the bike in person, but based on photos it appears to be all original (including the Brooks saddle) and in relatively good condition with no rust, scraps, etc. The bike has also been fully serviced and is ready to ride. The bike is also in my size.

Thoughts? Is this a fair price?

If it's indeed your size and it's COMPLETELY ready to ride I would say it is a fair price.

I really love my Super Course.

Love my 73 Supercourse frame. Even with newer parts it's a great bike. I say SOLD!


edited to add: make sure the seatpost isn't stuck and can be adjusted, since it is quite low right now.

If it fits and you buy it, consider flipping the seat collar around, right now the saddle is placed for someone who really wanted a short top tube and this bike did not have it.

This is an interesting bike in the context of the past few years. A clean early 70's Super Course was a $125 or so bike 5 years ago, and they were very common. I personally wouldn't pay $225 for one, but I'm sure I'm a hold out and I certainly wouldn't argue against the other advice provided here.

5 years ago, I would have bought $125. Super Courses as an investment, but there were none locally, on ebay, but then with shipping they would be $220 bikes with shipping. Aside from the often odd BB threading, they are under rated. The 27" wheels are a bit of a hurdle for an array of tires...

They did seem like good values. I had a very clean one, too small for me, that I picked up for $30 at a yard sale. That was before Competition GS's took off as well.

I have seen them sell for less than that relatively recently - and as much as $450, but I would expect something closer to $300 for a '531 Carlton SC in good, ready to ride condition.
