Yet again, I'm faced with a purchasing question (can you tell I'm looking at getting into cycling? :)).

If you're getting into cycling are you sure you want to start with a SS/FG?

I would think about building up the lungs & legs on a geared bike first before going there, unless you live in a wind-free, billiard table flat area... or just like deliberately doing things in the most painful way possible.

I've been riding bikes (geared, road and mountain, in addition to SS/fixed) for a few years now, but it was always a casual thing, and they were my friends bikes (I've yet to own one...). I'm also a runner/crossfitter so I'm already in pretty good shape :).

you could buy a cross check and covert it to a SS/FG...and if you don't like it, you can switch back to geared. Put fat tires on it and racks, do anything with it you want. The steam roller would seem to limit your choices.

I've definitely looked into the crosscheck, but I'd like a bike sooner than later, and trolling craigslist for that specific frame in my size just seems like a waste. I'm asking about the price of this steamroller because it's available and it has a setup I don't mind/would enjoy (FG).

ideally I'll get a crosscheck/similar bike some day, but for the time being this seemed like a good place to start -- I just need to know what a reasonable offer is to respond with :-/
