what is the point of the clip i see around the middle of some hubs. It is like a C clip in the middle. Whats the point of it. Ive seen it on the front and rear....and sometimes just the front. Ive seen them on 3 speeds ....and ive even seen them on campy record hubs. what do they do?
Oil hole cover -- great for using oil instead of grease for lubrication (low viscosity, short service life)

I've been using a small, needle-point grease gun on 'em (white grease). Works pretty well to flush out old grease, from the center outward. Need to wipe the outer grease covers a few times after riding, but that grease gun makes it easy to keep fresh grease in the Record hubs. :)

Or for flushing out contamination between repack jobs.
