I searched the forums and found one posting the describes my situation perfectly, but there is no conclusion: thread 668801 (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/668801-New-Cracking-Noise-Can-t-pinpoint)

Lately, I've been riding a lot in the country and cannot avoid a mile stretch of gravel road. The last few rides I've heard a sort of cracking noise coming from the front end. It isn't a consistent sound, difficult to replicate, and annoying.

I have an all aluminum frame and fork, so it isn't the crack that I've read about with the carbon hybrid bikes. I'd like to get it fixed on my own because we live far away from any bike shop. Any help is appreciated.

In my opinion w/o hearing or seeing the bike and from what u describe it could be:

1 front quick release, the plastic parts anre getting old and start creaking, specially near the lever. Put some grease in those plastic parts and see if the noise goes away.

2 Headset. i believe what u have in there is a semi-integrated headset. Grease in the cups, but u have to take the cups out.

3 the stem and handlebar. Again, disassemble in put them back together with little grease.

Maybe somebody has more ideas. Good luck.

Ultraman6970, thank you for the quick answer. Yesterday, I went over the whole bike and greased all the parts that I could. I was apprehensive about taking the the cups out. Thanks for letting me know that I have to take them out. I'll go do it right now.

Bingo.

Amazing how a little creak can turn a dream bike into a POS...
