Bicycle Mechanics - Campy Hub/ Spoke length Question

Are different Campy hubs of the same period (specifically Record 10s, Chorus 10s, Mirage 9/10s in this case) all the same sizes, especially as far as spoke length is concerned? Thinking about swapping out hubs between my OP/Campy 9/10s hub wheels. Novice at wheel building, can I re-use the spokes on the rim, say Chorus 10s hub to re-lace to Mirage 9/10s hub?

Btw, also, what is best way to measure rim/hub to figure out spoke length?

Maybe are the same, I know I will cause some controversy here but I bet the spokes u have right now are 297's and 295's or around 201s, 1 extra mm wont do anything to the built.

Loose the old wheel, and move one spoke at a time and put it back in the same position in the hub and in the rim, in this way u wont have to deal with crossing, figuring out stuff and the building will be faster also. I would go to the store to get a few new spokes just in case and replace all the nipples. When u more rims is easier tho.

Nipples need to be replaced? These are very low mileage wheels.

Also is there a spoke calculator that you can simply fill in MFG & Model etc to get the spoke length? I need to figure out the spoke length for Mirage 9/10 32H rear hub to Mavic MA3 rim.

why do you want to take a good hub out of a good wheel? do you really think you will know the difference riding down the road?

I would say they are the same as it does not make sense to make a different hubshell for 6 different levels. you can always measure them and check

The reason is a part vanity-matching colors and a part to build a dedicated 'trainer tire' rear wheel so I can free my polished silver alloy Chorus hub from current full time trainer mounted duty.

And I right now don't have a large enough caliper to measure and I don't quite trust myself whether I'm measuring correctly.

You bring up a good point though. I'm not sure whether it is a good idea to "break up" a good Excel built OP wheel for this experiment (since I'm a novice). The other is Performance built OP wheels that I wanna extract the Silver Record hubs for Nemesis wheelset build.

If you re-use the spokes you want them to end up in the same positions (front wheels have leading and trailing; and on rear wheels you also have different spokes on the two sides so there are four groups) because they've been bent to match the flanges.



Btw, also, what is best way to measure rim
Take two spokes of known length. Insert them in opposite holes on the rim. Thread the nipples you'll be using on to the depth you want. Measure across the elbows (I like dial calipers) and add to the total spoke length. Repeat in a few places because the rim might be ovoid and average. For example, you have a pair of spokes which measure 278mm, get .925 and .920" across the elbows, and end up with an ERD of 2*278 + 23.45mm = 579.5.

Account for stretch when ordering spokes.

Calipers. Harbor Freight has digital calipers for under $20.

Or just look at the manufacturer's specifications. Hub measurements are standardized and you don't get the variations you do with rims where ERD measurements aren't standard (with spokes extending to the nipple slots? or spokes extending to the nipple ends) and things vary (the last three rims I've measured with a claimed ERD of 577 or 579 depending on who you talked to were round at 578mm, round at 579.5mm, and ovoid at 578x579.5)
