Avid BB5, Quad Axis, Tektro.

Which one is best? For a mountain bike with disc brakes.

As they are all budget, of those, Avid BB5's for replacement pad avalibility, and servicing, but would really want a good set of Hydraulic disc if going off road, say from the Avid Juicy line, Shimano Deore up, or Magura Louise up.

Would look at what pads you can get, what will fit you bike, and who services them local to you, if you can't do this yourself

It's just i'm looking to buy a new bike, and out of all the one's i've looked at, they all have either one of these brakes. Also, the Quad Axis ones are hydraulic.

parts pick is part of price point.. so this is a budget bike choice.. $400 range..
Are you choosing the bike from the brakes they, product manager's, have chosen?

If you leave out all the Hydraulic Disc brakes .. Avid BB7,
[both pads dial in for adjustment, w/o tools]
if there is an Upgrade at point of purchase option..
Avid BB7 , part of the Sram group , is most popular..
Or leave the 5's on there.. Go with that.

ask if the shop stocks Quad Axis pads for spares, .. all the time..
if the answer is No , then consider that issue..

DOT fluid used in a lot of hydraulics , is hard on paint, wipe off immediately .

If you are looking for a complete bike, then the discs are just a small part of the package, you need to be looking at the bike as a whole, rather than a specific component, any bike which has lower end componets will have some compromies in spec, would be looking at what has the best frame / fork , as the rest can be replaced as it wears out.

shop the dealer first, the bike shop. which one treats you best, and will help more after the sale.

Take it that you are from the UK, if so, the best place to start for a bike specific question is a UK forum, like Singletrackworld, BikeMagic or Bikeradar.

For that Raleigh, realistically, over priced and under speced, Raleigh used to be a good brand in the UK 20-30 years ago, but they have never made a good MTB under their own name, they used M-trax and Dynatech for that.

For £499, look at somthing from Voodoo, Boardman or Carrera ranges from Halfords, somthing from PaulsCycles, or pickup a copy of MBUK or MTBR and see what they recomend this month; that £499 is a good price point, where you can get quite a lot your money.

The Raleigh is on ebay for around £277

I'm not too bothered about trying before buying since it's not a really expensive bike, but would you say it would be worth it for that amount of money?

Or should I look into a Specialized Hardrock Disc for example? It's about £100 more and seems to have worse components, so are you just paying for the brand?
