Fifty Plus (50+) - 2011 - Ididaride!

For all those who can find there way to upstate NY in mid August they 2011 Ididaride (http://www.adk.org/events/ididaride/index.html) will be held on 8/14. This is a great ride - 75 miles (only 6 turns). The scenery is spectacular and if you are looking o get away from the summer heat, every year I have done this ride the weather has been refreshing. On year I even wore a light jacket on part of the ride. Check out the slide show.

I absolutely love this ride - and there is beer and BBQ at the end with a nice band.

I grew up in the Hudson Valley and have not been to the Dacks in a long time. The club ride may be the excuse I need. The club web site is bookmarked - we'll see how my season shapes up.

I'm from Rochester, and signed up for the 75M ride, while my wife and kids ( ages 8 and 10 ) are signed up for the 20M segment.

While I can easily do 75 on the flats, I'm not so sure about the 7K feet of climbing. ;-) But I'm certainly going to give it a shot! We're all looking forward to it!

What band are you getting?

I'd like to get up there and do this ride sometime. I remember hiking the Northville-Lake Placid trail through Hamilton County. It's a rugged part of the Preserve. I just don't know if this year will work for me. There's always stuff going on that time of year, and school starts on the 10th of August.

Do you stay in North Creek? I was looking at prices, and the "preferred" lodging, according to the ADK web page, is the Alpine Lodge. But the Copperfield Inn looks much, much nicer, and it's $100 less per night.

I looked at at a map of the route on www.ridewithgps.com, and the detailed elevation map shows that there aren't too many sections that have a steep grade. It does look like I'll be able to spin through a fair amount of the route.

I suppose either would work. I have seen the rooms in the Alpine and they are nice. Also - check out the Black Mountain Lodge (http://www.blackmountainlodgeandrestaurant.com/), my friends own the place and it is very popular. We pass it on the ride. I do stay in North Creek - I have a small house up there.


I looked at at a map of the route on www.ridewithgps.com, and the detailed elevation map shows that there aren't too many sections that have a steep grade. It does look like I'll be able to spin through a fair amount of the route.
The grades are not steep - I use a compact with a 12/25. Some grades are long, like the one at the end of Route 8 up to Speculator.
The downhill east of Indian Lake back into North Creek is a screamer, I only hope they do some pavement work on that section as you have ot get out in the lane to find good road in spots.

Each year this ride is getting bigger and bigger - the food and the entertainment is also getting better. Most people get hooked on it and like me - do it every year.

If you are near Rochester you may check with TSL and see if he wants to come, that is if you have room, he has wanted to do this ride for the last few years but has no car to get there.

Where the ride starts is a town park/recreational center. There is a lot of parking although to put an RV there you should come early. There is another spot right beside the starting point that is not well marked where one could stash an RV. If you are really interested PM me and I can do some scouting for you. I can ask some of the locals when I am up there over Memorial day and see if there is a place much closer than either Warrensburg (16 miles) or Chestertown (15 miles).

An example of one that is not advertised well is Dagget Lake (http://www.daggettlake.com/), It is a little closer but still in that 15 +/- mile range.
There are lots of little campgrounds in the area, I just never have scoped them out for RV'ing.

Alas, I'm going to have to skip it. Turns out that the weekend is the only reasonable one my son and I can use in August to complete our bike trek across NY, so I cancelled my motel reservations for the Ididride. I'm hoping to be able to make it next year, though.

If you want another shot at a great Adirondack Century, the Pat Stratton (http://bikeadirondacks.org/events/stratton/) in Saranac is coming up on Aug 28th. I did this one last year and it was great. This is a small ride but if the word gets out it will turn big quickly. The group does a real BBQ at the end, bergers and dogs on the grill. The ladies bring home made pies, cakes and pasta/potatoe salads - a feast to remember. To top it off, last year I got a real nice shirt, not a t-shirt but a nice wicking shirt I have used for hiking and as a base layer when skiing. They also made this a poker ride, you picked up cards along the ride and those with winning hands at the end won a prize.

The ride is rolling, no killer climbs. The mountain views are spectacular and the views around Paul Smiths are as always - great. I have not signed up yet but will this week.

Another Ididaride completed. A great ride as always. There was the threat of rain but it did not come. I took the ride at a more relaxed pace this year, I was riding with some friends who did not want to hammer it. It was nice to back off and just enjoy it. I did most of the pulling but that was OK. BBQ at the end was good but not as good as last year. The ride is getting bigger each year.
