Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Spoke noise - any ideas?

A few thousand mile on my road bike on original wheels and when riding last week I noticed a "new noise". When climbing steeper hills there is a noise that sounds like a stick is gently brushing against the spokes - its hardly noticeable but definitely there. Only seems to happen on hills or is it because I am going so slow uphill that the noise is more noticeable :)

Anyways, I visually checked the spokes etc and cant see any issues. Could be a coincidence but it only seems to have started since I fixed a flat on the wheel last week - thoughts?

It's funny but I fixed a flat then had a vey annoying tick withthe pedals at 11 oclock every rev only on a 6% climb.

I went through eveything only to find that the cassette lockring slightly loosened when I removed the rear wheel for a repair. Took me about 2 weeks to find it.:mad:

I thik it may have worked loose during riding but not allowed to mave as it was clamped in the rear. Once I removed the wheel, it was allowed to move. Now when I remove the rear wheel for a repair, I always check the ring to make sure it's secure. It's a SRAM $45 model. I never had that issue with a Shimano. But now that I know, no biggie.

Also make sure you centered the wheel vs the brake calipers. A slight brushing sound may be the brakes rubbing aginst the pads. Especially if the wheel is a bit out of true.

ANothe thing, if you are in the lowest gear of the rear cassette, make sur eyour rear derailleur cage is not slightly hitting the spokes. I had one do that, Adjusted the limit screws and check to make sure the cage of the derailleur is not bent inward.

Interesting - it IS in the lowest gear (granny gear) - the derailleur is a good place to check also - Thanks ! ;)

Could be a loose spoke rubbing against another. Check, make sure they're all equal & appropriate tension.

Sound like you need a replacement spoke muffler. Come on down to the muffler shop'e and we can fix you right up. Just like the big national chains we offer a lifetime warrenty.

Was it the front wheel you had a flat on?

Do you have a computer sensor on the fork, and could you have knocked it slightly so it brushes the magnet on the spokes as it passes?

I'll also qualify this so that people don't think that it should be heard all the time... When climbing, the front wheel will flex slightly laterally along with the forks. It's then you might have the magent brush the sensor.

I had this before. The magnet came a little loose and started to tap the sensor with each rotation. I at first thought something was loose in the wheel itself, only to notice the magnet sitting outside the spokes. Me noticing this was of course after I started to take the wheel apart to check the bearings. Was way ahead of myself. Learned from this to look for the simple stuff first.

Thanks guys - i took the rear wheel off and checked all the spokes again and they all seem fine. I remounted the wheel and made sure there was plenty of clearance for the Garmin magnet etc. i will take her for a spin tomorrow and see how it goes :)
