Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Help me choose some new wheels please...

Was giving my bike a good once over today and noticed that the wheels are starting to crack. No real surprise since its getting up there in age and my 320 pounds aren't too friendly to the components either.

Looking for somewhere that I can get excellent 26" MTB wheels for a big guy. Would my best chance be the LBS or is there somewhere that specializes in these kinds of things that I would be better off going to?

Well you would want at least a 32 spoke count. Now are you looking for disk brake set up, or not.

Sorry about leaving that info out, they will be going on a Rockhopper Comp Disc. So I will need them disk compatible.

Looking at having a custom set laced up with Unicycle rims, have heard they are pretty much the toughest rims a person can buy in the 26" range.

Go with 36 spokes.

I build my own wheels, my only association with Peter is that I have read his website and purchased Wheelsmith DH13 spokes from him, as he was the only one I found offering small quantities custom cut and threaded.

Take a look at the 36 hole Velocity Chukker. Any Shimano hub, but I'd pick the XT.

36 hole Sun Rims ... Rhyno Lytes, Mammoth Mtn or BFR.

Me too. I got some mavic 321 rims laced up with 32 DT 2.0 spokes to Deore hubs and they've proven very reliable. And these are on my Hoss which sees some seriously rough riding.

Might want to go with tandem wheels. I don't have specifics.

I ride a Tandem- A full offroad Tandem that is ridden aggressively and has been modified to suit. There is a standard that is about of XT hubs onto Rhyno lite rims. They work but are not very exciting. I used these for a while but went disc brake as the V's were wearing out the rims. Many makes of hub that can be used but I went for Hope "Bigun" hubs with 36 spokes and onto a Full downhill Mavic rim. They are indestructable and we tried on many occasions to wreck them by having Front flats at 40mph on lumpy descents and the odd tree/rock/car that got in the way.

There used to be a spec called Freerider on wheels and style of rider over here. Street Trials riding where lots of jumps- running into walls and generally abusing the bike is the style. If a rim is classed as Freerider standard- it will be strong. XT hubs are stronger than XTR (Where lighness comes in and a loss of some strength) and are good And in case you wonder about it- The Tandem weighs 400lbs in ride trim with the pilot and stoker so those wheels do take a lot of strain. Especially on the fast offroad downhills that this bike (Or the riders) love.
