Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Rear Mavic Ellipse Question

I bought a rear Mavic Ellipse rear wheel over the weekend for a hundred dollars. The dude I bought it from said the wheel was in good condition but the hub was just a little loose. So I bought the tool and tightened it. I went for a short ride yesterday and everything seemed fine.
On my way to work this morning, I was going down a fairly big hill and when I tried to skid stop, the wheel gave out almost a half revolution before I could feel any tension again, so I tried to pedal again and the same thing happened, except the it was the other direction now.
I know it sounds like my cog and lockring isn't tight but I tightened that b%^@# as much as I can. I even climbed a couple hills before I tightened the lockring.
Is there any other reason this could be happening?

Now I have to go home in the rain with no brake and a problematic rear wheel. I fail:twitchy:

Your lockring wasn't tight. Its possible the threads are damaged. Remove the lockring and inspect the threads. If they are OK, then tighten it properly this time and install a brake.

It's a known issue that Mavic Ellipse have a gap between the cog and the lockring. The same exists on the Mavic Comete (disc).

Basically, the threaded area for the cog is a little bit wider than it should be.

How could I go about fixing this? I almost crashed earlier becuase of this. scary s*&^.

In theory, yes. But I have a friend who did just that and the spacer soon disintegrated due to the extreme pressure.

Was it an aluminum or steel spacer? I've used steel spacers w/o any problems.

I don't know. I have the same issue with a Mavic Comete. Can you suggest a particular spacer?

I got my spacers at my lbs, but it's been years, decades actually, since I last got any. All of my current wheels and cogs do not require spacers. Have you tried Business Cycles or any other serious track bike parts supplier? Let me rummage through my parts bin and see if I can find one.

no. im using a dura-ace lockring. it didn't have any problems threading in.

The ellipses have a special threading. Using the dura ace probably just stripped it.

But it doesn't feel like I stripped it. It threaded in without a problem. (I'm nervous now)

Yes, the threads are in fact different. The Dura Ace lockring is 1.29" x 24 tpi (32.8mm x 1.06mm), whereas the Mavic lockring is 33mm x 1mm. The difference, however, is very small, so it's possible that no significant damage has been done. I'm inclined to think that the real problem here is the spacer issue that Carleton identified.

The spacer issue is very common with ellipses. So it is possible that you are lucky and didn't strip just yet. Apparently phils can be used since the threading is even closer.

i would still go with the mavic lockring to be sure. i got mine at the LBS for 12$.

I'm gonna be going to the lbs as soon as I get off work. Hoping I didn't strip the hub.

Fixed. My friend had one laying around so I lucked out on that one.
I also put a 1mm spacer before the cog to fill to gap but haven't got the chance to test it yet because the roads have been wet.

While I was installing the wheel back, I noticed a noise coming from the hub, almost like a rubbing or hissing noise. I also felt like it was hard to turn the pedal. Any clue to what this could be? Bearings?

This wheel's brought me more problems than any other wheelset I've had, and I've only had it for 2 days.

It should have come with the spacers. I'm rather surpised you got the chainring to line up to the cog without it.

When I first put the wheel on it was a little noisy, but after I put the spacer on, pretty much the only thing I can hear now is the tire making contact with the pavement, except the noise I'm getting from the hub

There's rubbing/binding coming from the hub. I thought my tire was rubbing on something at first but after looking at it, it wasn't. It's gets hard to pedal at times also. What do you guys think it could be?
I just want this wheel to run right
