Fifty Plus (50+) - After 1.5 years here, I finally belong.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've been posting to this forum since August, 2009, but today I'm finally legit, as I am turning 50. I have the membership offer from AARP to prove it.
There's no opportunity to ride my age today, or to ride at all. Too many other obligations. But yesterday I rode 82 blissful miles (with 5000 feet of climbing) in the driftless region of Wisconsin, so I think I'm covered.
When I arrived on this forum, I had never ridden more than 25 miles. Even though I was technically too young, this seemed to be a tolerant place for beginners with low skills. And it was. Thanks, everybody.

Oh rats, you mean yesterday's ride doesn't count? I'm not going to have the opportunity to top 50 miles again until next weekend. That seems like bending the rules pretty far.

Was there an "amnesty day" recently? I don't remember one, you should probably buy a new bike as punishment for your indiscretion.

OK, I guess if the rider of the Amgen ToC get a day off because of snow, we can allow a birthday ride to occur later. Congrats on making it this far in life!

Happy birthday. They used to say life begins at 40, but, like they say, 50 is the new 40.
OK with me if the youngster hangs around.....hasn't caused any trouble, has he?
Got any BD cake for us?

You are not legit until you have that colonoscopy. We don't need pictures of that though

Yeah, I've already got the referral, but somehow I haven't got around to making the appointment. Sometime this summer, I suppose.

How many posts?
We occasionally tolerate postings from illegal ageians, but there's a pie assessment, per post, that's levied.

I just might do that. Today before my regular Tuesday hill-climbing ride, a riding buddy gently suggested that my regular ride (A 2010 Trek 2010) was really best suited for a rain bike and that my riding accomplishment was sufficient so that I should upgrade to something a little sportier. He suggested an Orbea Orca. Not that i'm susceptible to peer pressure or anything, but he seems like a sensible man.

I agree! Just when the weather turns nice and the flowers begin to bloom, we have a birthday, as if Mother Nature is celebrating our births!
Happy Birthday 16ers!
If I'm not mistaken, May 16th is Hermes birthday, too!
Happy birthday and welcome to the 50's club. This is my last year. Next year I get to join the 60's club. Woot!

Problem is that WHEN you upgrade to the Orbea- The trek will not be of a similar enough quality and will not give a good enough ride so it will be two bikes.
I upgraded from the OCR3 after a year in july 2007 and got a pretty good bike. Then 5 months later used the OCR on a wet and windy day as my foul weather bike to ride to the LBS and the owner mentioned that he had a Giant Mountain bike he could do at a good price to me. I just mentioned that if I was going to get a new bike- it would be a road bike and two weeks later collected the custon build on a TCR-C frame.
So your mate has a good suggestion in the Orbea- but either sell the Trek or lose the credit card for a couple of years after you have bought it.

You go ahead and try that and let us all know how it goes. You are married, right?

You have a point there. But then again, my wife is a gadget-head: kindle, ipad, iphone, i-this, digi-that. If you count her monthly subscription costs, buying an expensive bike might make us even. Or, I guess, we might just go broke.
(111 lb lost, 28.5 lb to go? That's outstanding! Good for you!)

Welcome Minnman, and I think most would say that by good cheer and vicarious Orbea viewing you're already fitting well in
However, the custodians of the forum might opine that by sneaking around for 18 monhs unqualified. you might be exiled to the outer circle for double the interlopery - till you're 53
Unless pie and IPA is sent to all who have an opinion, in quantities sufficient to change that opinion

Scoundrel. Cad! It would be better had you not confessed your sin, choosing simply live in shame, cycling everywhere as a suitable pennance for such grevious fraud.

But what ever you do, post a picture of the new bike when you get it. Against a white garage door, of course.:50:
